Over 400,000 Cured Of schistosomiasis In Nasarawa — Commissioner

In the year 2023, a total of 444,785 residents, including both children and adults, in Nasarawa State received comprehensive treatment for schistosomiasis, as revealed by Dr. Gaza Gwamna, the State Commissioner for Health. Schistosomiasis, defined by the World Health Organization as an acute and chronic parasitic disease caused by blood flukes of the genus Schistosoma, affected a total of 398,768 children and 46,017 adults in Nasarawa State. Dr. Gwamna highlighted the collaborative efforts between the Nasarawa State Ministry of Health and the Carter Centre in combating Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) in the state.

Flood Chaos At Nasarawa Federal Varsity: Classes Disrupted, Students Stuck

The schistosomiasis disease, known for its medical and socio-economic implications, has led to adverse effects such as limited educational and professional opportunities due to stigmatization and social exclusion. The state program received 818,829 tablets of Praziquantel for treating schistosomiasis among school-age children (5-14 years) and adults in endemic wards. Of these, 398,768 children and 46,017 adults received treatment for the disease.

Dr. Gwamna also highlighted the successful elimination of other NTDs in the state, including Onchocerciasis, Lymphatic Filariasis, and Trachoma. Recognizing NTDs as a threat to national and state progress, he emphasized their impact on Universal Health Coverage, poverty reduction, economic growth, and social development.

Looking ahead to 2024, the Commissioner outlined plans to train 390 Local Integrated Health Team members, 200 health workers, 42 school supervisors, establish more Hope Group clinics in proximity to clients, and train 500 Community Direct Distributors to achieve enhanced results in the fight against NTDs.
