Speaking on Wednesday during the official reception of defectors in Benin City, Okpebholo highlighted that the APC now controls 31 governorships and predicted that additional governors would soon defect to the party. He also thanked President Bola Tinubu and the people of Edo State for their continued support.

“Let me begin by thanking the people of Edo for the unity that binds us and strengthens our party. We now have 31 governors in the APC, and I can assure you that more are still coming. I also want to express my heartfelt gratitude to our father, President Bola Tinubu, who has been exceptionally supportive. We promise to deliver Edo State to him in the 2027 general elections,” Okpebholo said.

Meanwhile, the newly elected executive of the APC in Edo State, led by Jarrett Tenebe, has formally endorsed President Tinubu and Governor Okpebholo for second terms, citing their performance and impact.

The Chief Press Secretary to Governor Okpebholo, Patrick Akhere Ebojele, stated on Tuesday that the endorsement was made during the APC congress. Tenebe, in his acceptance speech, highlighted the leaders’ achievements in improving the lives of Nigerians and Edo residents.

Tenebe also announced the endorsement of Senator representing Edo North Senatorial District, Adams Oshiomhole, for a second term in the Senate, praising his effective representation.

While expressing gratitude to party supporters for their loyalty, Tenebe commended delegates for their trust in the executive team and pledged to guide the party to greater heights.

Shettima stressed that officials must counter misinformation about the reforms, explaining that the policies are intended to strengthen Nigeria’s economic foundation rather than harm the poor, as critics allege.

Speaking on behalf of President Tinubu at an interfaith breaking of fast for members of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) and MDA leaders at the State House, Abuja, the Vice President noted that the political season is approaching and government officials must clearly convey the administration’s policies to Nigerians.

“We are all political animals,” he said, calling on government officials to take responsibility for promoting the administration’s accomplishments.

“We must sell our government. Those spreading false narratives that tax reforms are meant to oppress the poor are mistaken. It is our duty to educate Nigerians, communicate the truth, and explain the benefits of these policies,” Shettima added.

Illustrating the reforms’ revenue potential, he compared Nigeria with South Africa. With a population of roughly 60 million—less than a quarter of Nigeria’s estimated 247 million—South Africa generates about ₦60 trillion annually from personal income tax alone, while Nigeria collects only ₦3 trillion. Shettima said this gap highlights the immense opportunities effective tax reforms could unlock for the country.

He recalled that the Tinubu administration inherited a fragile economy nearly three years ago but has since implemented bold reforms yielding positive results. Quoting Abigail Adams, he emphasized that leadership and character are forged in challenging times.

“When President Tinubu took office about 1,010 days ago, our foreign reserves were just around $3 billion—not even enough to import fuel for a month,” he said, praising the President’s courage in enacting far-reaching reforms that have stabilized the economy.

Shettima commended Tinubu as a leader who studies and practices power, showing courage in making tough decisions, and acknowledged the autonomy granted to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in executing its responsibilities.

“Posterity will be kind to you,” he told the CBN governor.

According to the Vice President, the reforms have helped Nigeria reach a critical turning point. “Three years on, the economy has rebounded. We have crossed the Rubicon and are on a path to sustained growth,” he said.

He also thanked the FEC members and senior officials for supporting the administration through difficult policy decisions.

“In times of tough reforms, you chose the country over comfort. You engaged constructively, provided scrutiny without sabotage, and proved that democracy works best when government institutions compete to serve the people,” Shettima said.

Emphasizing unity in governance, the Vice President warned that nations fail not due to hardship, but when distrust and suspicion dominate.

“Nations do not fracture because of hardship; they fracture when suspicion becomes the national language and the politics of ‘us vs. them’ overshadows the promise of ‘we’,” he said, noting the diverse religious, ethnic, and regional representation at the gathering as a reflection of Nigeria’s unity.

Describing Nigeria as the “greatest black nation on earth,” Shettima highlighted the country’s growing population—currently about 247 million and projected to become the world’s third most populous nation by 2050—as a call for effective governance and sustainable policies.

Reflecting on the significance of the Ramadan fast, he said sharing food during the fast-breaking symbolizes humility and service in leadership.

“This table is a lesson in perspective. It strips power of arrogance and graces leadership with humility,” Shettima said, noting that President Tinubu shared the same simple meal, demonstrating that true authority lies in faithful service to the people.

“Shedding arrogance and embracing humility reminds us that governance, like fasting, must be anchored in sincerity, sacrifice, and compassion for those living far from comfort,” he added.

Speaking yesterday during a visit to APC National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, and members of the National Working Committee (NWC) at the party’s National Secretariat in Abuja, Fintiri said while the administration’s decisions may be tough, they are necessary for long-term progress.

Reflecting on the impact of micro-economic reforms, the governor said:
“There is light at the end of the tunnel. The Renewed Hope Agenda is gaining traction across key sectors. The policies may have been tough initially, but they are yielding positive results, and the country is moving in the right direction.”

Fintiri, who recently returned to the APC along with key state lawmakers, council chairmen, and members of the State Executive Council, clarified that this is a “homecoming” rather than a defection, as he helped form the party in 2014.

He pledged to mobilise support for President Tinubu’s re-election in Adamawa, aiming to deliver 85 percent of the state’s votes to the ruling party.
“We are fully integrated, on the ground, and working tirelessly to ensure no other candidate secures even 25 percent of the votes in the state,” he added.

The governor also highlighted that the party has held its first stakeholders’ meeting in Adamawa, describing it as the largest political gathering in recent times. He reiterated his commitment to grassroots mobilisation to consolidate APC’s dominance in the state.

On the national stage, Yilwatda welcomed Fintiri’s return, describing it as a boost to the party’s influence. He commended the governor’s focus on development and coordination, saying it aligns with APC’s progressive ideals.
“We welcome him to where he rightfully belongs. APC is the natural home for leaders committed to reform, development, and national renewal,” Yilwatda said.

The chairman dismissed claims that APC is responsible for opposition party crises, emphasizing that democracy is competitive and that it is the opposition’s duty to organise themselves.
“Our duty is to deliver good governance and win elections based on performance,” he said, citing recent off-season electoral victories as evidence of public confidence in the party.

Separately, four ministers—Wale Edun (Finance & Coordinating Minister of the Economy), Atiku Bagudu (Budget & National Planning), Imaan Suleiman-Ibrahim (Women Affairs), and Hadiza Bala Usman (Special Adviser on Policy Coordination)—visited the APC secretariat. The meeting aimed to align government policies with the party’s manifesto and ensure promises made to Nigerians are implemented effectively.
