“God Forbid” – Former Plateau Governor Sounds Alarm Over One-Party Rule In Nigeria.
According to Nivo News, former Plateau State Governor and leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state, Jonah David Jang, has cautioned that Nigeria faces a serious threat to its democracy if it drifts toward a one-party system.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Jang issued the warning during a meeting with PDP stakeholders in Plateau State, following the recent defection of Governor Caleb Mutfwang from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress (APC). He emphasized the importance of protecting Nigeria’s democratic system.
“God forbid that Nigeria becomes a one-party state. By God’s grace, it will never happen. We must stand to ensure this democracy survives. We must not fail the nation,” Jang stated. He stressed that the country’s political framework must be preserved against the destabilizing effects of indiscriminate defections.
The former governor criticized the political system for enabling elected officials to switch parties after winning elections, noting that electoral mandates belong to parties, not individuals. “I have never seen the name of any individual written on any ballot paper. It is a party that is written on the ballot paper. It is the party that wins election, not individuals,” he said.
Jang further argued that Nigeria is unique in allowing politicians to transfer mandates from one party to another, a practice he described as detrimental to democratic development. He also accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of interfering in PDP’s internal affairs, insisting that the commission has no constitutional authority to block PDP candidates from contesting elections.
Reacting to Governor Mutfwang’s defection, Jang said the governor should resign and seek a fresh mandate under his new party before assuming any position. “You should first resign that position, call for a fresh election and then you can recontest in the new party. That should be the right democracy,” he stated. He maintained that Mutfwang’s mandate was a product of the PDP and could not be transferred elsewhere.
Jang concluded by urging PDP members to remain united and vigilant, promising that the party would mobilize its national leadership to counter what he described as escalating threats to Nigeria’s democratic system.
