The Super Eagles forward found the net in the 36th minute, converting a low cross to give Napoli the lead in a match that ended 2-2. The goal not only highlighted Osimhen’s sharp form but also placed him among the top performers in this year’s European campaign.
UEFA confirmed that Osimhen is now the first Nigerian to achieve such a scoring run in the competition’s group phase. The record adds to his growing reputation as one of Europe’s most consistent forwards.
Key Moment in the Match
Napoli entered the fixture already qualified for the knockout stages but eager to test themselves against Liverpool, one of the competition’s most decorated clubs.
Osimhen’s goal stunned the home crowd and forced Liverpool to respond quickly. The Reds equalized through Mohamed Salah before halftime and later went ahead with a strike from Darwin Núñez. Napoli leveled the score in the final minutes, ensuring both teams shared the points.
A Record for Nigeria
Osimhen’s achievement is a source of pride in Nigeria, where fans have followed his rise from the Lagos streets to Europe’s biggest stages. He now stands alongside African greats like Didier Drogba, Samuel Eto’o, and Mohamed Salah, who also left their marks on the Champions League.
“This is a special night for me and for Nigeria,” Osimhen said in a post-match interview. “To score against a team like Liverpool and to set a record in the Champions League makes me very proud. But the most important thing is that the team continues to grow.”
Rising Reputation
The 24-year-old forward has been central to Napoli’s success in recent seasons. Last year, he became the first African player to win Serie A’s top scorer award, finishing with 26 goals as Napoli secured their first Italian league title in more than three decades.
His combination of speed, strength, and sharp finishing has attracted attention from top clubs across Europe, including Manchester United, Chelsea, and Paris Saint-Germain. However, Napoli have insisted they want to keep their star forward as long as possible.
Nigerian Football History
Before Osimhen, only a few Nigerian players had consistent scoring records in the Champions League. Finidi George, Nwankwo Kanu, and Obafemi Martins all shined in the past, but none matched Osimhen’s current run of five consecutive group stage goals.
Football analysts in Lagos said Osimhen’s form could inspire a new generation of Nigerian strikers. “Young players now see what is possible on the global stage,” said former Super Eagles midfielder Mutiu Adepoju. “Osimhen’s success shows the quality and potential in Nigerian football.”
What Comes Next
Napoli will face strong competition in the round of 16, with clubs like Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, and Arsenal all in the draw. Osimhen’s form could be decisive as the Italian champions aim for their first Champions League semifinal in history.
For Liverpool, the draw means they finish second in the group and face the risk of a tougher opponent in the knockout rounds. Manager Jürgen Klopp admitted his team struggled to contain Osimhen.
“He is a world-class striker,” Klopp said. “We prepared for him, but he still found space and punished us. That is what great players do.”
A Star Beyond Football
In Nigeria, Osimhen has become more than a footballer. His story of rising from poverty to global fame has turned him into a role model. He has also been active in charity work, supporting schools and hospitals in his home country.
As the Champions League moves to its decisive stages, Osimhen’s record against Liverpool has cemented his status as one of the brightest stars in European football. Fans across Africa will be watching closely to see how far he can lead Napoli in the competition.
