“Nigeria In Shock As Senate Addresses Kidnap Of 87 Students And Teachers Across States”.

The Senate has strongly condemned the abduction of 87 students and teachers in separate attacks in Borno and Oyo States within 24 hours, describing the incidents as a devastating assault on the nation’s future.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

News reports that the Senate Leader, Opeyemi Bamidele, made the condemnation in a statement issued on Sunday through his Directorate of Media and Public Affairs.

Bamidele expressed deep concern over the renewed wave of attacks on schools despite previous security interventions and international support aimed at safeguarding educational institutions across the country.

He noted that the latest kidnappings were particularly alarming, recalling that about $30 million was raised globally in 2014 to strengthen security in both public and private schools following earlier mass abduction incidents.

Reports indicate that on Friday, suspected gunmen abducted 45 students and teachers from Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Yawota, Community Grammar School, and L.A. Primary School in Esiele, Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.

On the same day, suspected Boko Haram insurgents reportedly attacked Mussa Primary and Junior Secondary School in Askira/Uba Local Government Area of Borno State, abducting 42 students.

The twin incidents have heightened concerns over the safety of schools, particularly in rural communities vulnerable to bandit attacks and insurgency.

Bamidele, who also serves as Vice Chairman of the Senate Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution, said the situation further underscored the urgency of establishing state police across Nigeria.

He disclosed that the proposal for state police is already at an advanced stage within the ongoing constitutional amendment process at the National Assembly.

According to him, lawmakers are working to conclude the process before forwarding it to state Houses of Assembly for ratification.

“One of such initiatives is the ongoing review of the 1999 Constitution that seeks to establish state police, which is now at an advanced stage,” he said.

He explained that the proposal would require approval from at least two-thirds of state legislatures before it can be implemented nationwide.

Bamidele urged sub-national governments and lawmakers to treat the initiative as a national priority rather than allow it to be politicised along ethnic, regional, or religious lines.

He also called on political leaders to support the move in the interest of national security.

Pending the creation of state police, the Senate Leader urged both federal and state governments to urgently strengthen the Safe School Initiative as an interim measure to protect students, teachers, and school infrastructure.

He lamented that rising insecurity and repeated school attacks were worsening Nigeria’s out-of-school children crisis, estimated at about 18.3 million.

Describing the abductions as a “tragic national concern,” he said they undermine the country’s development progress and human capital growth.

Bamidele added that the 10th National Assembly would intensify legislative actions on insecurity when plenary resumes on June 2.

He further revealed that lawmakers are considering amendments to the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022 to strengthen the justice system and ensure tougher penalties for violent crimes nationwide.

Some aspirants of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the Ondo Central senatorial primary have expressed concern that imposing an unpopular candidate could hurt the party’s chances in the 2027 general election.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

One of the aspirants, Olumuyiwa Adu, who spoke to journalists on Monday in Akure, condemned alleged intimidation by suspected political thugs during the exercise.

Adu claimed that armed youths were present at the venue, intimidating voters and openly insisting that only a preferred aspirant should be voted for. He warned that forcing candidates on party members could have serious political consequences for the APC in the state.

According to him, such practices undermine internal democracy and could weaken the party’s electoral strength. He also alleged that some armed individuals disrupted the process while threatening participants to vote in a particular direction. Despite the tension, he said he restrained his supporters from retaliating to avoid violence.

Another aspirant and member of the House of Representatives for Ondo Central, Adeniyi Adegbonmire, also described the exercise as a “complete charade,” alleging widespread intimidation, violence, and disruption across several wards.

He said armed thugs interrupted voting in his ward in Akure South when it became clear he was leading. Adegbonmire called for urgent intervention from the party’s national leadership, insisting that voters were deliberately prevented from participating.

He further alleged that similar incidents had occurred during earlier primary elections, describing the situation as a troubling pattern that must be addressed to preserve the credibility of the party’s internal processes.

However, another aspirant, Dr. Taiwo Fasoranti, gave a different account, describing the exercise in Ward 7, Ijomu, Akure, as peaceful and orderly. He commended the large turnout of supporters and said the process reflected the wishes of party members.

Fasoranti added that the exercise was smooth in his area and expressed confidence in the overall conduct of the primaries.

The immediate past Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello, has emerged victorious in the All Progressives Congress (APC) senatorial primary for Kogi Central ahead of the 2027 general elections.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Reports indicate that the primary election, held on Monday, featured two other aspirants contesting the party’s ticket.

Bello defeated the APC Diaspora Secretary, Momoh Obaro, and Ibrahim Yakubu Adoke to secure the party’s nomination for the senatorial district.

His victory comes after days of tension and speculation within political circles over his clearance to participate in the exercise.

The former governor’s political future had been the subject of debate following concerns over his screening process and eligibility to contest the primaries.

Earlier reports suggested that Bello did not appear before the APC screening panel, raising questions about his participation in the race.

However, the APC National Assembly Screening Committee later cleared him alongside other aspirants, allowing him to contest in the senatorial primaries across Kogi State.

The development followed earlier uncertainty within party ranks, with reports indicating that 17 senatorial aspirants were cleared across the state’s three senatorial districts.

The controversy surrounding his participation was further heightened by his ongoing legal issues with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Despite the initial speculation, Bello was eventually placed on the ballot and went on to secure victory over his opponents.

His emergence now positions him as the APC candidate for the Kogi Central Senatorial District in the 2027 general elections.

The seat is expected to be highly competitive, given Bello’s influence as a former two-term governor and the political weight of the district.

Bello, who served as governor of Kogi State from 2016 to 2024, now prepares for a new political battle as parties intensify preparations for the 2027 elections.
