The Director-General of the NYSC, Olakunle Nafiu, announced the development on Saturday in Abuja during the inauguration of the remodelled clinic at the scheme’s National Directorate Headquarters. The event also marked the first anniversary of Nafiu’s tenure as NYSC chief.

According to a statement by the scheme’s Director of Information and Public Relations, Caroline Embu, the additional slots have already been incorporated into the 2026 NYSC budget.

Speaking at the event, Nafiu revealed that the scheme plans to mobilise about 450,000 prospective corps members in 2026 while prioritising their safety during deployment.

“This year, we are mobilising around 450,000 prospective corps members, and as much as possible, we avoid deploying them to red zones,” he said. “We remain mindful because we owe parents the responsibility of safeguarding the lives of their children.”

Nafiu also stated that the 2027 federal budget includes provisions to enhance corps members’ welfare, including upgraded kits, as well as improved feeding and transportation allowances.

The NYSC DG explained that the remodelling of the headquarters clinic is part of broader reforms to improve staff welfare and operational efficiency. He highlighted several initiatives over the past year aimed at strengthening institutional capacity, including the successful conduct of the 2025 staff promotion exercise, provision of special allowances, payment of retirement benefits to disengaged staff, and a recruitment drive to boost operational workforce.

He also disclosed that the scheme received a Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) bus donation to improve mobility for both staff and corps members.

On the Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme, Nafiu said NYSC is partnering with the Enterprise Development Centre, Pan-Atlantic University to digitise the platform and enhance its reach. Additionally, the scheme has strengthened collaborations with the Nigerian Governors’ Forum and the Association of Local Government Chairmen of Nigeria to deepen support for the programme.

“We are working to transform and reform the NYSC. We are doing everything possible to secure the future of our corps members,” Olawande said. He also advised corps members to avoid travelling at night due to security concerns, recommending that they spend the night at the nearest military barracks, police station, or NYSC office if travel is unavoidable.

He warned against dragging the state into fresh tension, accusing the state government of attempting to revive old allegations for political advantage.

Adewara said the PDP would not remain silent while what he called “political narratives” are used to influence public perception around a tragic incident that claimed multiple lives in Offa in 2018.

He also urged residents, especially affected families, not to allow their pain to be used for political gains, insisting it is unjust to associate Saraki with the crime.
