Defence Minister Confirms Presence Of U.S Soldiers In Nigeria, Reveals Their Mission.
The Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (rtd), has confirmed the presence of American military personnel in Nigeria.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Speaking with The Nation at the Ministry of Defence, Musa explained that the deployment was approved by the federal government and that the U.S. soldiers are in Nigeria strictly for training and technological support.
He noted that American forces have permission to collaborate with their Nigerian counterparts in parts of Bauchi State to assist in operations against terrorism and banditry.
General Musa emphasized Nigeria’s openness to working with friendly nations to strengthen efforts against terrorism. He also clarified that such collaboration is routine, pointing out Nigeria’s similar support roles in countries like Liberia, Tanzania, and Sierra Leone.
“Some of them came to work with us, particularly in Bauchi, to provide training and technological assistance. The U.S. has advanced technology, including drones and satellites, which are critical for our operations,” Musa said.
He added, “Collaboration is common practice. We’ve done it in Liberia, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, and even Burma. We need this support now because the terrorist threat is widespread, especially following the instability in the Sahel and the fallout from Libya. Too many arms and criminals have filtered into the region, and we must confront this challenge with the help of friendly nations.”
The Defence Minister assured that Nigeria’s sovereignty remains fully respected. He stated that the American presence is governed by a clear agreement, is temporary, and strictly objective-focused.
“Everything we are doing is based on agreement. They respect our sovereignty. Their stay is short-term, and once the objectives are achieved, they will leave,” he added.

His confirmation came after a question-and-answer session during plenary, following the submission of his nomination by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to the Senate.
The nomination letter was read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio and subsequently referred to the Committee of the Whole, which later endorsed his confirmation.
While addressing lawmakers during the screening, Darma pledged to collaborate closely with the National Assembly to tackle Nigeria’s housing crisis.
“We will work together with the National Assembly to ensure that the challenge of housing is addressed,” he said.
He revealed that more than 100 million Nigerians are impacted by inadequate housing, stressing the urgent need to increase access to affordable homes.
Darma outlined plans to implement policies that support low- and middle-income earners, alongside reforms aimed at enhancing efficiency in the housing sector.
Responding to concerns raised by Adams Oshiomhole, he expressed confidence in addressing the housing shortfall.
“I believe everything is possible. I will do everything within my capacity to close the gaps and improve the situation,” he stated.
He also underscored the importance of strengthening governance and accountability in the sector, noting that both public institutions and private developers have critical roles to play.
Darma further promised to reposition the ministry for improved performance, drawing from his experience as former Executive Secretary of the Petroleum Technology Development Fund.
In addition, he highlighted the link between housing and national security, emphasizing that stable communities are vital for sustainable development.
He assured lawmakers that restoring Abuja’s master plan and enhancing urban development in the Federal Capital Territory would be key priorities.
His confirmation comes as the Federal Government intensifies efforts to bridge Nigeria’s housing deficit and improve service delivery in the sector.
