The directive comes amidst a significant increase in food prices, exacerbating the challenges of rising inflation In January, inflation surged to 29.90%, with food inflation reaching 35.41%, reflecting the growing economic strain on Nigerians. The escalating food prices have sparked protests across the country, highlighting the urgency of addressing food scarcity and economic hardship.
During a meeting with the 36 state governors on Thursday, President Tinubu emphasized the need to curb profiteering by merchants and ensure fair distribution of food supplies. He urged governors to adopt strategies similar to those implemented by the Kano state government to tackle hoarding for profit.
In a statement by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to the President, Tinubu’s directive underscored the importance of monitoring warehouses holding food items nationwide. The President instructed relevant security agencies, including the Inspector-General of Police, the National Security Adviser, and the Department of State Services, to take decisive action against hoarding and profiteering.
Tinubu’s proactive approach aims to alleviate the burden of food scarcity on Nigerians and promote equitable access to essential commodities. By combating hoarding and ensuring fair distribution, the government seeks to mitigate the impact of rising food prices on citizens’ livelihoods and well-being.
