The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is eyeing Thursday, February 1st, 2024, as a potential date for a bye-election to address vacancies in both state and federal legislatures. Professor Yakubu disclosed that, post-legal disputes, the courts mandated the commission to organize rerun elections in 34 federal and state constituencies, encompassing one senatorial seat, 11 federal constituencies, and 22 state constituencies.
He reassured, “After concluding all litigations, including gubernatorial elections pending at the Supreme Court, the Commission will present a comprehensive analysis of petitions, including instances where the courts directed the issuance of Certificates of Return to alternative candidates. This will be part of the insights gained from the 2023 General Election to inform future electoral reforms.”
Regarding the bye-elections, Professor Yakubu mentioned a commitment made during a recent address, stating, “The Commission will conduct elections to fill vacancies in the National and State Assembly constituencies.”
He specified that the Commission is considering the first week of February 2024 for both rerun and bye-elections, with an official announcement of the date, detailed timetable, and schedule of activities, including full delimitation details, to follow after a review of preparations. These details, such as polling unit locations, registered voters, and collected Permanent Voters’ Cards (PVCs) per constituency, will be made publicly available on the INEC website for transparency and information dissemination.
