“‘Go Home And Sleep, We Are In Charge’ – Wike Declares In Rivers”.

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has asserted that he remains “in charge of Rivers State,” as political tensions continue between him and his estranged political godson, Governor Siminalayi Fubara.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Wike made the declaration on Saturday during a civic reception organised in his honour by the Wariwike Ethnic Nationality at Ogu in Ogu/Bolo Local Government Area.

After expressing gratitude to his political allies and supporters, Wike reassured them that the ongoing political crisis in the state was under control.

“When God promotes you in life, you’ll go back and say, ‘God, I thank you.’ I can tell you, go home and sleep very well with your eyes closed. We’re in charge,” he said.

Supremacy Battle Escalated Since 2023

The tensions between Wike and Fubara began after the governor’s rift with members of the Rivers State House of Assembly perceived to be loyal to Wike. The conflict escalated into a political stalemate, culminating in Fubara’s six-month suspension and the imposition of emergency rule by President Bola Tinubu in March 2025.

Although the emergency rule was later lifted, the rivalry has persisted, with pro-Wike lawmakers threatening to impeach the governor over alleged unconstitutional conduct.

In a strategic move, Fubara recently defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), widely seen as an effort to shield himself from removal. Meanwhile, Wike has mobilised support through his Renewed Hope Ambassadors platform, gathering leaders across party lines to back President Tinubu’s re-election bid.

During the state coordinators’ inauguration earlier this week, Wike accused the Rivers State Government of denying permission to use Yakubu Gowon Stadium in Port Harcourt for the event—a claim attributed by Fubara’s camp to ongoing construction at the venue.

Original Allies vs. Later Converts

At the reception, Wike reiterated his appreciation for those who had supported him since the early days of his political career.

“Stop Waiting For Power — Serve First,” Abiola Challenges Nigerian Youths.

“Let me say, and I stand to be corrected, that those who worked with us from the inception in 2014, when we launched the governorship idea, none of them have disappointed us,” he said.

He noted that those who disappointed him were “later-day converts” who were not part of his original team during his tenure as governor.

“Those we cannot tell their story are the later-day converts. They were not part of the original planning for my becoming governor of Rivers State,” Wike said.

He also praised President Tinubu’s leadership, particularly in reforming the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).

“The NDDC we have today is different from the NDDC we used to have. Why? Because you have a president who believes in renewing the hope of the hopeless,” he said.

He argued that despite their prominence, no northern politician has a wider voter base than him.

Atiku specifically said Kwankwaso’s influence is largely limited to Kano State, adding that even there, political support is now split between the former governor and Governor Abba Yusuf.

“Can you tell who is a current leader in the North who has more votes than I have? Talking of leaders like Tambuwal, Kwankwaso, El-Rufai and also the emerging political leaders, none of them have got that northern vote as much as I’ve got,” he said.
