According to Nivo News, this message was the central theme at the Nigeria@65 Conference held in Abuja by the Citizenship and Leadership Training Centre (CLTC). The conference, themed “Restoring Values and Volunteerism Among the Youth,” was organized in collaboration with Aspitah Global Resources, the United Nations Inter-Agency Group on Youth, and the Nigeria Youth Futures Fund (NYFF) under LEAP Africa.
Director-General of the CLTC, Rinsola Abiola, emphasized that Nigeria stands at a decisive point where restoring discipline, empathy, and national service has become vital for collective growth. She stressed that every act of volunteerism contributes to the country’s progress, adding that true leadership begins with selfless service to one’s community.
“This event provides a platform for reflection and renewal, where our youth can rediscover the spirit of volunteerism that drives active citizenship and national development,” she said.
The Director-General of the National Orientation Agency (NOA) and other government officials echoed Abiola’s message, urging the youth to rebuild trust in governance through civic engagement and responsible citizenship.
Representing the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the agency’s Head of Enlightenment and Reorientation, Aisha Mohammed, highlighted that civic engagement and integrity education are essential pillars of nation-building. She revealed that the EFCC has established youth clubs across schools to promote patriotism and accountability, describing volunteerism as a vital tool for national growth.
The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier-General Olakunle Nafiu, reiterated that service to the nation remains the truest measure of leadership. He noted that the NYSC continues to merge volunteerism with entrepreneurship and civic values to build responsible leaders.
Similarly, the National Commander of Man O’ War Nigeria, Gbenga Adedamola, described volunteerism as the “soul of patriotism,” calling on young Nigerians to see service as a lifestyle rather than an occasional act.
Delivering the keynote address, tech entrepreneur and CEO of Future Africa, Iyinoluwa Aboyeji, argued that Nigeria’s greatest problem is not bad leaders but a systemic failure of leadership culture. He cautioned against the belief that one individual can fix the country, stressing that leadership must be a shared responsibility among citizens.
“We must teach our youth to be resolute, responsible, resourceful, resilient, and relentless,” Aboyeji stated.
Professor Tunji Olaopa, Chairman of the Federal Civil Service Commission, lamented the erosion of moral values in public institutions, noting that restoring honour to public service is essential to rebuilding the nation. He urged the younger generation to view public service as a noble vocation that demands innovation, flexibility, and purpose.
A representative of the United Nations also encouraged young Nigerians to take pride in small acts of service, affirming that even modest contributions can transform communities and revive the nation’s spirit.
The conference concluded with the Youth Leadership Debate Finale organized by LEAP Africa, where students from across the country showcased their intellect and patriotism. Rev. Fr. Moses Orshio Adasu University emerged winner, represented by Esther Nguuma Dodo and Blessing Ehigocho Oigaba, earning ₦2.5 million and laptops. Lagos State University and the University of Uyo took second and third place respectively, receiving cash prizes and digital devices.
