Governor Uba Sani has revealed that Kaduna State’s water production has risen from 8% to over 30% in the past two and a half years, following a comprehensive overhaul of the state’s water infrastructure.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The Governor made the announcement during a courtesy visit from the management of the National Water Resources Institute (NWRI) and pledged full 100% water coverage across the state by late 2026.

He lamented that “for over a decade, our water sector suffered from systemic neglect.”

“When this administration assumed office, the sector was in deep distress—treatment plants were dormant, distribution networks had been severely compromised by past urban renewal projects, and overall water production had dropped to a mere 8%,” he said.

To reverse this, the Governor said his administration embarked on an unprecedented effort to overhaul Kaduna’s water infrastructure, committing between ₦93 billion and ₦100 billion from 2024 to 2027 to ensure every household has access to a steady supply of clean water.

He added that over ₦5 billion has been spent replacing pipes lost to vandalism or damaged during previous urban renewal projects in Zaria and Kafanchan, while a further ₦10 billion is being invested in priority pipelines for Kaduna. Additionally, ₦1.4 billion has been allocated for high-quality water purification chemicals, and ₦1.3 billion cleared in outstanding electricity bills to ensure uninterrupted pump operations.

Governor Sani emphasized that the reform agenda also focuses on staff welfare, noting that over ₦900 million in salary arrears for Kaduna State Water Corporation (KADSWAC) employees has been cleared. He has also allocated land for a Mass Housing Project in Millennium City, Kaduna, to provide water sector professionals with proper accommodation.

The Governor pledged to collaborate with the NWRI for long-term sustainability, including establishing branches in Zaria and Kachia to bridge training gaps and ensure state agencies are staffed with top-tier water professionals.

Earlier, NWRI Director-General Dr. Abduljalal Danbaba highlighted the institute’s role in research, manpower training, and harmonizing the activities of the country’s 12 River Basins. He added that NWRI has been recognized as a World Meteorological Centre in Africa and is offering complimentary forms to Kaduna State for short-term courses, with beneficiaries paying only 50% of registration fees.
