NYT Reports: How A Trader In Onitsha Shaped Trump’s Airstrike Decisions In Sokoto.
In the bustling markets of Onitsha, among wheelbarrows of sugarcane and stacks of hard hats, Emeka Umeagbalasi quietly sells screwdrivers and wrenches. Yet this modest trader has unexpectedly stepped into the global spotlight, as his claims about attacks on Christians in Nigeria have been cited by prominent U.S. lawmakers.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
According to The New York Times, Umeagbalasi’s work has been referenced by Ted Cruz, Riley Moore, and Chris Smith. Reporter Ruth Maclean traced how his findings traveled from southeastern Nigeria to the corridors of power in Washington.
On Christmas Day, Donald Trump ordered airstrikes in a different part of Nigeria, reportedly influenced in part by narratives alleging widespread violence against Christians. For Umeagbalasi, seeing his warnings echoed by the former U.S. president was, in his words, “miraculous.”
“If nothing is done,” he said, “Nigeria will explode.”
Umeagbalasi claims to have documented 125,000 Christian deaths in Nigeria since 2009, though he admitted to The New York Times that many figures are unverified, drawn largely from secondary sources, including advocacy groups, Nigerian media, and internet searches.
Requests for comment from the U.S. lawmakers who cited his work went unanswered. A White House spokeswoman declined to comment on the accuracy of his data, stating only that “the massacre of Christians by radical, terrorist scum will not be tolerated.”
Accurate data on Nigeria’s violence is notoriously hard to collect. The government does not release comprehensive figures on killings or kidnappings, nor record victims’ religious identities. Many attacks occur in remote areas and go unreported. While research confirms significant Christian casualties, scholars note that insecurity affects both Christians and Muslims. For example, the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project estimates around 6,700 deaths in the first seven months of 2025, including insurgents and soldiers, with roughly 3,000 civilians; religious affiliation was unspecified.
A Catholic, Umeagbalasi founded the International Society for Civil Liberties and the Rule of Law in 2008. He rarely visits conflict zones, instead inferring victims’ religion based on geography.
“For instance, if killings happen in Borno… once they occur in southern Borno, it’s likely the victims are Christians,” he explained.
However, The Times noted that many Boko Haram victims are Muslims, contradicting some of his classifications. A recent case highlighted the discrepancy: when 25 schoolgirls were abducted in Kebbi State, local authorities confirmed they were Muslim, but Umeagbalasi insisted they were mostly Christian, alleging the government had “Islamized” them.
Nigeria’s foreign ministry spokesman, Alkasim Abdulkadir, dismissed his claims, calling them “full of fallacies and confirmation bias.” Analysts have criticized his methods, with Nnamdi Obasi describing Intersociety’s research as unreliable, and Matthew Hassan Kukah arguing that focusing narrowly on Christian casualties overlooks Nigeria’s wider governance failures.
Despite criticism, Umeagbalasi continues his work from home, surrounded by shelves sagging under old papers and plaques praising his “service to humanity.” He claims nearly 20,000 churches have been destroyed over 16 years and estimates Nigeria has about 100,000 churches—figures he admits were obtained via “Googling it.”
Still, he presses on, preparing another report on what he calls the worsening security situation for Christians.
“This is our heavenly marathon,” he says.
