Cooking Gas Price Cuts Bring Relief To Abuja Households.
Residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have welcomed the recent drop in the price of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), popularly known as cooking gas, saying the reduction will ease household financial burdens.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Speaking with journalists in Abuja on Sunday, locals urged the Federal Government to ensure the price drop is sustained and deepened to make cooking gas more affordable across Nigeria.
Naija News reports that cooking gas currently sells between ₦1,080 and ₦1,400 per kilogram in various retail outlets in the FCT, with NIPCO offering the lowest rate of ₦1,080 per kg.
Victoria Ahaneku, a civil servant, described the reduction as a welcome relief that could boost economic activity. “Lower cooking gas prices increase consumer spending power, as households will have more disposable income for other goods and services,” she said. She, however, called for further reductions, noting that many families still find LPG unaffordable and continue to rely on expensive alternatives like charcoal and firewood.
Businesswoman Mary Olobeyo also applauded the price drop but emphasized the need for long-term measures to ensure affordability. She highlighted transportation, storage, and retail logistics as major contributors to high costs. “The government should invest in infrastructure, regulatory reforms, and alternative distribution methods, such as pipelines and rail, to reduce reliance on costly road tanker deliveries,” Olobeyo suggested.
Teacher Aisha Abubakar welcomed the reduction but warned about frequent price fluctuations in the LPG market. “Nigerians need a sustained reduction. Cheaper and stable prices will encourage domestic usage and expand LPG adoption nationwide,” she said.
Businessman Adebayo Olurunfemi noted that while the intervention is commendable, it remains insufficient given Nigeria’s rising cost of living. “The government’s efforts to resolve issues at Dangote Refinery and other depots are good, but Nigerians still face high rent, school fees, petrol prices, taxes, and bank charges. More needs to be done to make life easier,” he said.
Public servant Charity Samuel added that affordable cooking gas is crucial for households with low purchasing power. “Many families rely on LPG because it’s the cleanest cooking option. Cheaper gas will help households significantly, and the government should ensure it remains accessible,” she said.
The Federal Government had earlier assured Nigerians that LPG prices would stabilise after surging to as high as ₦1,800 per kg in September 2025, following a strike by the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria.
Dr. Ekperikpe Ekpo, Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), explained that the price spike was due to the strike at Dangote Refinery and maintenance at Nigeria LNG Train Four. He added that the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) has been directed to intensify monitoring of LPG depots nationwide to prevent hoarding and artificial scarcity.
