Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has reaffirmed her dedication to advancing women’s health and girl-child education through her office and national initiatives. She made this commitment at the 7th MERCK Foundation First Ladies Initiative (FLI) Summit held yesterday in Dubai, UAE, as part of the Foundation’s 13th anniversary celebrations.

Speaking alongside First Ladies from 13 countries, Senator Tinubu praised the MERCK Foundation’s contributions to medical training across Africa and Asia, noting its significant impact on public health and access to education for girls.

“This programme holds immense value for Nigeria. I am committed to expanding it through my office and the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare to empower more Nigerian doctors and improve healthcare delivery,” she said.

Highlighting her background in education and her leadership of the Renewed Hope Initiative, Senator Tinubu stressed that girl-child education is critical to building resilient societies.

According to her media aide, Busola Kukoyi, the First Lady noted that her initiative has consistently prioritized education and youth empowerment, with a strong focus on girls.

She also applauded MERCK’s scholarship efforts, which have trained over 2,270 healthcare professionals across 52 countries in vital specialties. She highlighted the Foundation’s unique approach of empowering doctors to set up clinics and offer services directly within their communities.

The summit provided a platform for African First Ladies to deliberate on improving healthcare systems, tackling gender-based violence, and advancing education despite cultural and financial challenges.

MERCK Foundation Chairman, Dr. Frank Stangenberg-Haverkamp, declared that “girls’ education is not a luxury,” emphasizing the urgency of dismantling systemic barriers. CEO Dr. Rasha Kelej reiterated the Foundation’s mission to train medical professionals and expand educational opportunities for girls.

Under its Educating Linda initiative, the Foundation has granted full scholarships to over 950 girls across Africa. Its community outreach also addresses stigma around infertility, gender violence, and chronic diseases.

The summit concluded with renewed pledges by First Ladies to strengthen their partnerships with the MERCK Foundation in the shared pursuit of equity in health and education.

Relying on Section 147(2) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which empowers the President to appoint ministers subject to Senate confirmation, Tinubu urged lawmakers to give the nomination swift consideration.

The President also forwarded two additional nominations for screening: Ambassador Sola Enikanolaiye as Minister of State, and Rabiu Abdullahi Umar as Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA).
