Algeria Petition CAF, FIFA Over Controversial Refereeing After AFCON Exit.
According to Nivo News, the Algerian Football Federation has formally petitioned the Confederation of African Football and world football governing body FIFA over what it described as questionable refereeing decisions during its quarter-final exit from the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations against Nigeria.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The federation confirmed the move on Monday, stating that official letters had been submitted to both CAF and FIFA, requesting a comprehensive investigation into the conduct of match officials during the encounter. Algerian football authorities said the decisions taken during the match generated widespread dissatisfaction among players and supporters, raising serious concerns about the credibility of officiating at the continental level.
In a statement released by the federation, it said it could not ignore what it viewed as refereeing actions that undermined confidence in African officiating and damaged the international image of the sport on the continent. The Algerian FA explained that the complaint was accompanied by a formal request for a probe to establish the facts surrounding the match and determine appropriate action in line with existing regulations.
The petition followed Algeria’s 2–0 defeat to Nigeria on Saturday, a result that ended the Desert Foxes’ campaign at the tournament. Goals from Victor Osimhen and Akor Adams secured victory for the Super Eagles and sent them through to the semi-finals.
Emotions reportedly ran high after the final whistle, with several Algerian players confronting match officials on the pitch. Videos circulating online later showed heated exchanges involving players and referees, as well as a brief attempt by some supporters to encroach onto the field before security operatives restored order.
Amid the fallout, CAF announced that it has opened an investigation into alleged misconduct during and after the match. The continental body disclosed that it had reviewed match officials’ reports alongside video evidence and subsequently referred the matter to its Disciplinary Board for further action.
Despite the controversy, the Algerian Football Federation appealed to supporters to remain supportive of the national team, noting that the squad is currently in a rebuilding phase. The federation added that lessons learned from the tournament would shape preparations for upcoming competitions, including the qualification campaign for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
