Rivers Impeachment Crisis: Diaspora Nigerians Accuse Political Godfathers.
According to Nivo News, Nigerian professionals in the diaspora have rallied behind Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, describing renewed efforts to impeach the duo as politically motivated and potentially destabilising to democratic governance in the state.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Speaking under the platform of the Nigerian Diaspora Professionals for Democratic Stability, the group made its position known in a statement issued on Monday, warning that persistent impeachment threats could plunge the oil-rich state into prolonged political instability.
The professionals attributed the impeachment moves by the Rivers State House of Assembly to an ongoing power struggle between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, who currently serves as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory. They described the process as a misuse of legislative authority driven by political interests rather than constitutional accountability.
According to the statement signed by the group’s president, Dr Chukwudi Nnamani, and its secretary, Adewale Ogunsiwaju, the repeated impeachment threats have become predictable and cyclical, reflecting a battle over control of Rivers State’s political structure and resources. The group argued that the crisis began shortly after Fubara assumed office, following the collapse of his political relationship with Wike.
The diaspora professionals noted that the Rivers State House of Assembly has remained deeply divided, with legislative actions allegedly influenced by external political forces instead of the will of the electorate. They warned that no democratic system should tolerate continuous threats of removal against a sitting governor for refusing to submit to political godfathers.
They further cautioned that persistent impeachment attempts could undermine governance, discourage investment and weaken institutional stability in a state considered vital to Nigeria’s economic survival. The group stressed that Rivers State should not be reduced to a theatre for elite political battles, noting that unresolved power struggles could have far-reaching economic consequences.
Defending the conduct of Governor Fubara, the group maintained that political disagreements or policy differences do not amount to gross misconduct under the constitution. It argued that a governor exercising constitutional authority should not be labelled rebellious for asserting independence.
The professionals emphasised that impeachment was intended as a last-resort constitutional mechanism and not a routine political weapon. They disclosed that they were closely monitoring developments in the state, warning that frequent impeachment plots weaken public confidence in democratic institutions.
They called on political leaders and stakeholders to prioritise dialogue, restraint and respect for constitutional order, insisting that the mandate of the people must be upheld to ensure stability and effective governance in Rivers State.
