Labour Party Turmoil Escalates Over Alleged Abuse Of Power And Court Processes.

Published

on

According to Nivo News, the internal crisis rocking the Labour Party has intensified as the faction led by Senator Nenadi Usman launched a fresh attack on Barrister Julius Abure, accusing him of unlawfully presenting himself as the party’s National Chairman in defiance of court judgments and the stance of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The Usman-led faction, through a statement released on Monday in Abuja and signed by its Interim National Secretary, Darlington Nwokocha, described Abure’s actions as deceptive, unlawful, and damaging to the integrity of the party. The group maintained that both a Supreme Court judgment delivered on April 4, 2025, and INEC’s clearly stated position had stripped Abure of any legitimate claim to the office he continues to parade.

Despite these legal pronouncements, the faction alleged that Abure has persisted in presenting himself publicly as the party’s leader, a move it said undermines the rule of law and deepens the Labour Party’s leadership crisis. The group further called on the Prosecutor-General of the Federation to immediately act on recommendations for Abure’s prosecution over alleged impersonation and related offences.

The statement was issued in response to Abure’s earlier claims that INEC’s refusal to upload the details of Labour Party aspirants for the February Federal Capital Territory area council elections, as well as the Supreme Court ruling, were being deliberately misinterpreted.

Reacting, Senator Usman insisted that the Labour Party was not for sale, accusing Abure and his associates of attempting to commercialise the party’s structures for personal gain. She alleged that Abure and his supporters had turned themselves into habitual litigants, having filed more than twenty court cases against INEC and the party’s recognised leadership across several courts nationwide.

The faction described the series of lawsuits as an abuse of court processes and a calculated attempt to plunge the party into deeper turmoil while reversing democratic progress. It dismissed Abure’s claim that INEC had “moved on” from the matter, describing it as delusional and inconsistent with subsisting judgments that had removed him from office.

According to the statement, INEC acted appropriately by refusing to issue access codes for uploading candidates’ names allegedly submitted by Abure, following allegations that monies were illegally collected from individuals under the false promise of securing them party tickets for the FCT elections.

The Usman-led group reaffirmed its call for swift prosecution, stressing that the Labour Party remains united and committed to building a Nigeria anchored on justice, equity, and good governance under the leadership of Dr. Alex Chioma Otti as National Leader, Senator Nenadi Usman as National Chairman, and Senator Darlington Nwokocha as National Secretary. The faction urged party members, youths, women, and aspirants preparing for the 2027 elections to remain resolute and focused on the party’s vision for national renewal.

reports that the party made its position known during an emergency press conference in Ilorin on Friday, describing the development as politically motivated and unjust.

PDP spokesman, Comrade Olushola Adewara, said the alleged plan to reopen the case amounts to an attempt to politicise a matter that has already been concluded by the courts.

He alleged that the move was targeted at dragging Saraki into a case in which, according to him, legal authorities had previously found no evidence linking him to the incident.

Adewara referenced earlier legal opinions from the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation, which reportedly stated that Saraki was not connected to the robbery case.

The party insisted that suspects in the case had already been prosecuted and convicted, with judgments upheld at appellate levels, while the matter is currently before the Supreme Court.

It also called on security agencies to monitor the situation closely, warning that such actions could heighten political tension in the state.

The party further appealed to residents, especially families of victims in Offa, not to allow their pain to be used for political purposes.

He said: “I will be running for governor in the 2027 governorship election. I have come to plead with you to set up a small committee… to determine how we can collaborate to make this happen.”

He also questioned whether Ogun State would experience a “coronation” or a competitive election process, urging stakeholders to allow open political contest.

The PDP chieftain noted that Ogun West’s long-standing exclusion from producing a governor is a legitimate grievance, but stressed that aspirations must still be tested through competition.

In response, IPAC leadership and other political actors at the event called for collaboration and careful selection of leaders ahead of the 2027 elections.
