Issa Sy is familiar with the competition, having previously served as Video Assistant Referee during the group-stage match between Morocco and Tanzania, a role that placed him at the heart of key officiating decisions earlier in the tournament.
Nigeria secured their place in the quarter-finals with a commanding 4-0 victory over Mozambique, underlining their attacking strength and growing confidence. Algeria, on the other hand, endured a tougher route to the last eight, edging past DR Congo with a narrow extra-time win in a closely fought contest.
As excitement builds toward the decisive showdown, Burkina Faso’s technical director, Vincenzo Alberto Annese, has tipped the Super Eagles as strong contenders for the title. He singled out Victor Osimhen as the standout striker of the tournament, describing Nigeria as the most dependable attacking side in the competition.
Nigeria currently boast the most prolific attack at AFCON 2025, having recorded 12 goals shared among seven players, with Osimhen and Ademola Lookman accounting for half of that total. Annese believes this depth and firepower give Nigeria an edge over other title hopefuls, including the host nation.

The UAE Ministry of Defence said on Saturday that its air defence systems intercepted several of the incoming missiles and drones, calling the assault a significant escalation in regional tensions. According to its statement on X, air defence units engaged nine ballistic missiles and 33 drones during the March 14 attack, which left six dead and 141 injured, including foreign nationals.
Meanwhile, Nigeria’s Defence Minister, Christopher Musa, linked the increase in attacks to terrorists’ belief that dying during combat guarantees them entry to paradise, particularly during Ramadan. “As usual during Ramadan, these terrorists believe that death brings them to heaven, so they are willing to commit offenses or sacrifice themselves for their cause,” he said.
Why Boko Haram and ISWAP Are Targeting Military Bases
In northern Nigeria, a surge of coordinated attacks by Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) on military formations and civilian communities is raising fears of a renewed insurgency.
In the past three weeks alone, at least 65 Nigerian soldiers have been killed in assaults across Borno and Katsina states. Security experts say the attacks are part of a calculated effort by insurgents to reclaim territory and reinforce control in parts of the North-East.

The video showed a man, Abduljalal Usman, claiming he received only one mudu of rice and one mudu of maize as his share of palliatives meant for staff of the Dandi Local Government Education Authority.
In a statement on Sunday, Governor Nasir Idris’ Special Adviser on Communication and Strategy, Abdullahi Idris, said the man is a known psychiatric patient who was manipulated for political purposes. He added that the claim was false and inconsistent with the actual palliative composition, which included rice and millet—not maize.
Idris noted that when the video was recorded, the palliative allocation had not yet arrived at the council headquarters. He also highlighted that the Ramadan intervention programme has been widely welcomed by residents, particularly during the holy month.
“The distribution of grains by the governor has been widely applauded by the people. It is therefore not surprising that such support has unsettled the opposition ahead of the 2027 political season,” Idris said.
The adviser further alleged the video is part of a broader campaign to discredit the administration, citing previous staged incidents and exaggerated reports of bandit attacks. He emphasized that misinformation will not undermine public confidence in Governor Idris’ commitment to peace and development.
Meanwhile, the suspension of Abduljalal Usman by the Dandi Local Government Authority has been lifted pending investigation.
