2027 Power Tussle: Art Minister’s Bold Stand Ignites Zoning Debate Nationwide

Published

on

On Tuesday, actor-turned-politician Kenneth Okonkwo advised the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to select a northern candidate for the 2027 presidential election. However, the Minister of Art, Culture, and Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa, believes that presidential power should remain in Southern Nigeria to ensure fairness and regional balance.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

According to NIVONEWS, Musawa made this known during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, emphasizing that the zoning principle—though unofficial—has been a stabilizing factor in Nigerian politics. She explained that after eight years of northern leadership under former President Muhammadu Buhari, it was only just that the presidency moved to the South with Bola Tinubu’s emergence.

“So, it is understandable that after eight years of President Buhari, who is from the North, power needed to shift down to the South, right?” she asked. “Now, for the next two years, four years, it is going to be with the southern presidency, and hopefully, power should continue for the next four years after that to be with the southern presidency only to create that sort of balance.”

Musawa, who hails from the northern region and is one of the youngest ministers in President Tinubu’s cabinet, added: “Hopefully, one day we’ll be able to get over zoning issues and ensure candidates are judged based on their capacity and what they bring to the table. But since we are not there yet, zoning still plays a stabilizing role.”

According to NIVONEWS, Musawa also referenced her poem, I Am a Nigerian, as a call for unity beyond ethnic lines, but admitted that zoning remains necessary in the present political climate to give all regions a sense of belonging. “Every part of Nigeria, or rather the different regions—the North and the South—must feel as if they’re being carried along,” she stressed.

In contrast, Okonkwo, a prominent ADC member, argued that the coalition platform should go North in 2027, warning that fielding another southern candidate would strengthen Tinubu’s re-election bid. “My strategy this time around is that I am going to support a northerner in 2027,” he said on Channels Television’s Politics Today. He added that a consensus northern candidate could break APC’s hold on power.

Meanwhile, the internal crisis in the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) over zoning continues to fester. In 2023, the PDP fielded Atiku Abubakar from the North, which angered some Southern members like then-Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike, now Minister of the Federal Capital Territory. Wike defied the PDP by supporting Tinubu, insisting the South must complete its eight-year tenure.

According to NIVONEWS, Wike’s stance mirrors Musawa’s broader sentiment: power rotation isn’t just a political arrangement—it’s a necessity for inclusion and peace in Nigeria’s pluralistic society.
