The Department of State Services (DSS) has disclosed that several high-profile terrorism suspects are currently facing prosecution across Nigeria as part of the government’s continued efforts to strengthen national security and ensure justice for victims of violent attacks.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

According to Nivo News, the DSS Director-General, Tosin Ajayi, revealed that five suspects are standing trial for their alleged involvement in the June 2022 attack on St. Francis Catholic Church, Owo, Ondo State, which left more than 40 worshippers dead. Ajayi said the ongoing prosecutions highlight the government’s firm commitment to bringing all perpetrators of terrorism and related crimes to justice through lawful processes.

The security agency further confirmed that several other suspects are being prosecuted in connection with the June 2025 Yelwata massacre in Benue State, where dozens of villagers were brutally killed. Ajayi reaffirmed that the DSS is working closely with other security agencies and the judiciary to ensure speedy and transparent trials.

The DSS announced that the Federal High Court in Abuja will on November 19 resume the trial of two alleged leaders of the Ansaru terrorist group, identified as Mahmud Muhammad Usman and Abubakar Abba, who were arrested in a high-risk counterterrorism operation in July. The duo is facing a 32-count charge bordering on terrorism financing and illegal mining.

Usman, described as the self-styled Emir of Ansaru, has already been sentenced to 15 years imprisonment for one of the charges, while Abba pleaded not guilty to all counts. The DSS noted that both men were captured after an extensive intelligence-led operation following months of surveillance.

The agency is also prosecuting Khalid Al-Barnawi, the alleged mastermind of the 2011 bombing of the United Nations building in Abuja, alongside four other suspects. The prolonged trial, which had suffered several delays, recently resumed after the court granted an accelerated hearing request from the DSS.

In another case, five men have been arraigned in connection with the St. Francis Catholic Church attack in Owo. The defendants — Idris Abdulmalik Omeiza, Al Qasim Idris, Jamiu Abdulmalik, Abdulhaleem Idris, and Momoh Otuho Abubakar — are charged with terrorism and alleged membership of the Al-Shabab terrorist group, said to have an operational cell in Kogi State. They have pleaded not guilty and are currently being held in custody pending trial.

Additionally, several suspects linked to the Yelwata and Abinsi village massacres in Benue State are also undergoing trial for their alleged roles in the coordinated killings. The attacks, which occurred between June 13 and 14, 2025, led to dozens of deaths and widespread destruction.

DSS Director-General Tosin Ajayi emphasized that these prosecutions demonstrate the agency’s commitment to ensuring accountability for all acts of terrorism in Nigeria. He stated that over 125 convicted terrorists have been sentenced since last year, with numerous cases still pending.

Ajayi assured that the DSS remains resolute in upholding the rule of law while pursuing justice for victims of terror and safeguarding the peace and stability of the nation.

Factional Crisis Rocks ADC In Akwa Ibom As Party Splits Deepen.

Published

Barely a year after its inauguration in Akwa Ibom State, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has been plunged into a deep factional crisis.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Multiple factions are now locked in a struggle for control of the party, leaving members uncertain about the legitimate leadership structure.

One faction is led by John Akpanudodehe, a former National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), while another is headed by the embattled state chairman, Dick Duke.

Although the leader of a third faction could not be immediately confirmed, findings indicate that another group also exists within the party.

Sources further suggest that the Akpanudodehe-led faction is seeking to remove the current chairman through a recently held congress that has sparked controversy.

In response, Dick Duke convened a stakeholders’ meeting over the weekend, where he rejected the legitimacy of the said congress.

He said the party had formally written to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to distance itself from the exercise, citing a subsisting court order.

According to him, his tenure as state chairman is still valid until May, and any congress conducted before then would be unlawful.

Duke added that the party would only proceed with proper congresses after the expiration of his tenure and the resolution of legal issues, in line with due process.
