Highlighting that no leader has ever triumphed over their own people, Ezekwesili, the former Vice President of the World Bank’s Africa region, shared her thoughts via a statement on social media.

She elaborated, “When a populace tells their leaders they are hungry and angry because of poor governance, the wise response is not to silence, threaten, taunt, or brutalize them, showcasing a tragic empathy deficit syndrome. The wise actions are to listen, listen, and listen. Persuade with factual counterpoints, present a convincing plan of action, and mobilize the people to ‘Arise and Build!’”

Ezekwesili, who also served as the Minister of Solid Minerals, called on President Tinubu, the National Assembly, state governors, and state assemblies to seize the opportunity to do the right thing. She suggested using this moment as a golden opportunity to reset Nigeria by launching a credible National Conversation on effective governance structures for productivity, competitiveness, prosperity, justice, equity, equality, order, peace, harmony, stability, and resilience.

She urged the leaders to come out to the protest grounds nationwide to engage with citizens and hear their demands directly. Ezekwesili warned against remaining secluded behind the high gates of publicly-funded state and government houses, indulging in luxurious lives while citizens suffer from severe economic hardship. She insisted, “Come out.”
