Tensions Rise As Hoodlums Allegedly Sabotage Abuja Protest, Says PresidencyThe Presidency has attributed the chaos during the hunger protest in Abuja to the infiltration of hoodlums. Abiodun Essiet, the Senior Special Assistant to President Bola Tinubu on Community Engagement (North Central), made this assertion while launching an online situation report platform for residents of North Central states to share eyewitness accounts of the ongoing protests.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Essiet based her statement on her visits to Nyanya, Karu, Orozo, and Karishi, where she observed that hoodlums had disrupted the protest in Abuja. She also noted that no protests had occurred in Kogi, Kwara, and Benue States.

Essiet shared her observations on her X handle as the #EndBadGovernanceinNigeria protest entered its third day. She wrote, “Today, I visited Zone A, AMAC (Nyanya, Karu, Orozo, and Karishi) in Abuja, FCT, to monitor the situation and engage with community leaders and police. People have resumed their normal daily activities.

Since the protests began, my office has launched an online situation room for volunteers across North Central to report on-ground situations. Kogi, Kwara, and Benue have remained peaceful with no protests. Jos had a peaceful protest. The protest in Abuja was infiltrated by hoodlums.”

Meanwhile, Amnesty International (AI) accused the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command of using teargas and firearms on unarmed protesters, contributing to the chaos in Abuja. AI claimed that police used excessive force against peaceful protesters at Moshood Abiola Stadium, arresting 50 individuals.

AI demanded the immediate and unconditional release of the arrested protesters and condemned the use of deadly force on individuals protesting against hunger in the FCT. “The Nigerian authorities must immediately end the ongoing violent crackdown on peaceful protesters at Moshood Abiola Stadium, Abuja. The over 50 peaceful protesters arbitrarily arrested across the FCT must be released immediately and unconditionally.

“The shocking and unconscionable use of deadly force on protesters against hunger in the FCT is unacceptable. Those responsible must be held accountable. People have the right to peacefully demand accountability through protests, and this right must be respected,” AI said.

Daniel Bwala, Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Media and Policy Communications, has suggested that some Nigerians staying in the country may be in a better financial situation than those who have relocated abroad. Speaking on The Morayo Show, Bwala highlighted the difficulties faced by migrants in countries like the United Kingdom:....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

    • Many Nigerians who left with hopes for better opportunities are currently struggling, despite holding university degrees and earning in foreign currencies.

    • Due to labour market realities, many graduates abroad are working in roles outside their fields of study, such as in warehouses or care facilities.

    • Although migrants may earn thousands of pounds monthly, a significant portion of their income is consumed by essential costs like rent, bills, food, and transportation.

    • Because their earnings are often insufficient to cover these living expenses, many are forced to work multiple jobs just to survive.

    • Bwala noted that the pressure of living abroad often leaves migrants with little disposable income and no safety net, whereas those earning lower incomes in Nigeria can often rely on support from friends and family.

    • Bwala described this experience for many as “modern-day slavery,” arguing that those in Nigeria who believe they are suffering are often better off than those who left five years ago.
