The thanksgiving, held at the Methodist Cathedral of Peace and Excellence in Opebi, Ikeja, brought together an array of dignitaries, including publishers, editors, and senior government officials, who paid tribute to Osinubi’s decades of service to journalism and his role in shaping modern Nigerian media.

President Bola Tinubu, in a statement released by the State House, congratulated Osinubi on the milestone, describing him as “a distinguished media leader who rose through hard work, commitment, and faith to lead one of Nigeria’s foremost newspapers.” The president praised his integrity and professional excellence, noting that Osinubi’s leadership helped strengthen the media’s role in democracy.

Delivering the sermon, Rt. Rev. Dr. Solomon Adegbite, Bishop of the Ijebu Diocese of the Methodist Church Nigeria, said Osinubi’s life reflected humility, perseverance, and divine favour. He urged the celebrant to continue using his gifts to serve God and society.

“Your journey is a testimony that God rewards diligence and faith,” Adegbite said. “Continue to grow in grace and to be a light to those following behind.”

Among those in attendance was Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Gbenga Omotoso, who described Osinubi as “a humble professional whose quiet strength continues to inspire journalists across generations.” He added that the turnout of prominent figures on a Monday morning showed “how deeply respected and loved he is.”

In his remarks, Osinubi expressed gratitude to God, his family, and colleagues, recalling his early years in journalism when resources were scarce and technology was limited. “We made the best of what we had,” he said. “This new generation is not lazy — they are simply working under different circumstances.”

Osinubi joined Punch in 1976 and rose through the ranks to become Managing Director and Editor-in-Chief, steering the publication through critical periods in Nigeria’s political and media history. Under his leadership, Punch expanded its reach and cemented its reputation for bold, investigative reporting.

Colleagues described him as a mentor and visionary leader who upheld professionalism and ethics even under political pressure. Former associates noted that his insistence on fairness and accuracy set standards that still guide the paper’s newsroom today.

The event also featured musical performances, prayers of thanksgiving, and tributes from friends and family members who highlighted his role as a devoted husband, father, and church leader. His wife, Mrs. Oluwafunmilayo Osinubi, and their children joined him at the altar as the congregation sang hymns of praise.

As the ceremony concluded, guests said the celebration was more than a birthday — it was a recognition of a life dedicated to truth, faith, and service.

Osinubi’s 70th-birthday thanksgiving marked both a reflection on his past achievements and a reminder of his ongoing influence. For many in attendance, his example served as a call for renewed integrity and excellence in Nigeria’s fast-changing media landscape.

During a recent visit to Washington, D.C., Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), argued that the prevalence of election rigging in Nigeria is largely due to voters failing to actively defend their ballots. Obi emphasized that while candidates play a role in the process, credible outcomes ultimately depend on citizens remaining at their polling units to ensure votes are counted transparently. He criticized the “transactional” nature of Nigerian politics, suggesting that many voters prioritize other activities over the essential task of monitoring the electoral process. According to Obi, Nigeria’s primary challenge is poor political leadership, and he urged citizens to take collective ownership of their votes to demand the accountable governance required for the country to succeed.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has called for increased citizen involvement in protecting electoral integrity. During a recent trip to Washington, D.C., Obi stated that election manipulation persists because voters frequently leave polling stations before the counting process is completed. He argued that:

  • Voters must proactively defend their ballots at polling units to ensure transparency and prevent rigging.

  • Nigeria’s fundamental obstacle is a crisis of political leadership, rather than a lack of natural or human resources.

  • Real change requires Nigerians to move beyond passive participation and take active responsibility for the electoral process.
