Police and Military Allegedly Open Fire on Peaceful #FreeNnamdiKanu Protesters in Abuja
Security forces reportedly opened fire on peaceful protesters in Nigeria’s capital, Abuja, on Monday, as demonstrators called for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Eyewitnesses said police and military personnel fired live bullets and deployed tear gas at the crowd near the Federal Secretariat. Protesters had gathered peacefully, chanting slogans such as “Free Nnamdi Kanu now” and asserting their constitutional right to protest. Many fled in panic, and several fainted due to tear gas exposure. At least three injuries were reported.
The #FreeNnamdiKanu movement has been active for years, advocating for Kanu’s release. He was arrested in 2021 on charges related to his leadership of IPOB, which the Nigerian government has labeled a terrorist organization. Human rights groups have repeatedly criticized this designation, citing concerns about freedom of expression and assembly.
Prominent activist Omoyele Sowore condemned the use of force, describing the security forces’ actions as “unprovoked” and calling for accountability. The Foundation for Environmental Rights, Advocacy & Development (FENRAD) also issued a statement criticizing restrictions on the protest and urging authorities to respect civil liberties.
The Nigerian government has yet to comment on the incident. The use of live ammunition against peaceful demonstrators raises significant legal and human rights concerns, as international law limits force to situations where it is absolutely necessary and proportionate.
Protest organizers have vowed to continue demonstrations until Kanu is released. Human rights groups are monitoring developments closely, and international observers are calling for an independent investigation into the security forces’ actions.
This incident highlights ongoing tensions between the Nigerian government and activist groups, reflecting broader challenges in balancing national security with civil liberties. Observers say the government’s response could have lasting implications for the future of protest movements in Nigeria.

Atiku Opens Up On ADC 2027 Game Plan, Says Consensus Candidate Comes First.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has said the African Democratic Congress (ADC) will first pursue a consensus arrangement before considering a primary election for its 2027 presidential ticket.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Atiku made this known during an interview on Arise Television on Wednesday while discussing the party’s leadership and strategy ahead of the next general election.
He said he is open to backing a consensus candidate if that becomes the party’s collective decision, stressing that such support should not be interpreted as stepping aside.
“It is not about stepping aside, but whether I am willing to support, and yes, I will,” Atiku said.
According to him, the ADC’s first priority is to build internal unity and reach an agreement among stakeholders before considering a competitive primary process.
“Our first option will be to work out a consensus. If that doesn’t happen, then of course we will explore other options. And yes, I will support whoever eventually emerges,” he stated.
Atiku also expressed confidence in the political experience within the party, saying he believes a consensus is achievable and may make a full-scale primary contest unnecessary.
“That remains our preferred path. We will go for primaries if consensus fails, but I honestly do not expect it to get to that stage because we are dealing with mature and experienced politicians,” he added.
His comments come amid growing political consultations and coalition talks as parties begin to position themselves ahead of the 2027 general elections.
