Ayodeji Moses-Ojo was installing an advertisement on June 18 when a high-tension cable sent a powerful electric shock through his body. The force of the surge threw him from the billboard, causing him to fall onto the busy road below. He was found unconscious, badly burned, and bleeding.

Doctors at Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) diagnosed Moses-Ojo with multiple fractures, including a broken jaw, hand, and leg. His injuries also included severe burns.

Initially, his employer promised to cover his medical expenses, which were estimated to exceed 10 million naira. However, Moses-Ojo claims the company later reduced its commitment, offering only 3 million naira and stating that no further assistance would be provided once that amount was exhausted.

Moses-Ojo’s story highlights the risks faced by workers in the outdoor advertising industry, where safety measures are often inadequate. Electrocution accidents have been reported in various parts of Nigeria, underscoring the need for stricter safety regulations and enforcement.

The Lagos State Ministry of Labour and Employment has stated that it is investigating the incident and will take appropriate action. Meanwhile, Moses-Ojo continues his recovery, hoping for justice and improved safety standards for workers in his field.

This incident serves as a reminder of the dangers faced by workers in high-risk industries and the importance of employer responsibility and government oversight in ensuring workplace safety.
