Veritas University Denies Sexual Harassment Claims by Former Nun

Published

on

Veritas University on Tuesday denied allegations of sexual harassment made by former staff member Rev. Sr. Anastasia Kinse, saying she never provided evidence to support her claims.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Ben Agande, the university’s Head of Corporate Affairs and Communications, said Sr. Kinse “did not at any point provide evidence that she was sexually harassed.” He emphasized that the accusations did not involve any priests associated with the institution.

Sr. Kinse, who had worked at Veritas University, publicly accused priests of treating religious sisters as “ornaments in habits” and pressuring them for sexual favors. She claimed to have video and audio evidence of the alleged abuse but said she was unable to release it publicly.

“During her tenure, no formal complaints were submitted to the university,” Agande said. He also noted that her departure from the institution several months ago was unrelated to the allegations.

The Missionary Sisters of Perpetual Help of the Archangels (MOPHAS), Sr. Kinse’s religious order, confirmed her dismissal from the congregation. In a statement, the order cited her “persistent rejection of fraternal correction” and her conversion to Islam as reasons for the decision.

The allegations have drawn attention from members of the Catholic Church in Nigeria, who expressed concern about the treatment of religious sisters. Some called for an independent investigation, while others urged caution, stressing that no evidence had been presented to substantiate the claims.

Experts on religious affairs say the case highlights ongoing debates about accountability and transparency in religious institutions. “Regardless of the outcome, this situation underlines the importance of clear reporting channels and protection for staff within religious organizations,” said Dr. Chinedu Okafor, a lecturer in religious studies at the University of Lagos.

Sr. Kinse’s claims have also sparked discussions on social media, where supporters called for action against abuse in religious settings. However, critics argue that the public nature of the allegations, without evidence, could harm the reputations of both the university and the Church.

Agande said the university is committed to maintaining a safe and respectful environment for staff and students. “We take any allegation seriously, but claims must be supported by facts,” he said.

The controversy has brought attention to how complaints are handled in religious and educational institutions in Nigeria. Observers note that while such allegations are sensitive, proper investigations are essential to ensure justice and protect all parties involved.

As of now, the Catholic Church has not issued an official statement regarding the allegations. Both the Church and Veritas University say they are prepared to cooperate with any independent investigations that may arise.

The situation remains under public scrutiny, with activists and religious organizations calling for transparency and accountability. Meanwhile, the university maintains that all claims of misconduct must be backed by evidence before any action can be taken.

This case marks a significant moment in the ongoing national discussion about the protection of women in religious institutions, with potential implications for policy and oversight in similar organizations across Nigeria.

The case, marked CR/647/2026 and filed by the Inspector-General of Police, accused him of submitting misleading information in a petition dated October 5, 2022.

Turaki pleaded not guilty when the charge was read in court.

His lawyer, Abulaziz Ibrahim (SAN), urged the court to grant bail, arguing that the allegation was bailable and highlighting Turaki’s status as a former minister and senior political figure.

However, the prosecution counsel, Usman Rabiu, opposed the application, alleging that the defendant had previously evaded service and failed to appear in court until he was declared wanted. He urged the court to deny bail or impose strict conditions.

Delivering ruling, Justice Kekemeke held that bail is a constitutional right and noted that Turaki had voluntarily appeared before the court. The judge further ruled that the prosecution failed to establish that he was a flight risk.

Shock Claim: Electoral Officers Rely On Law To Escape Sanctions After Alleged Dollar Bribes.

Published

on

A former Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mike Igini, has alleged that politicians distributed dollars to presiding officers shortly after they were trained for the 2019 general elections.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

He claimed the alleged bribery took place between the period of training and election day, during preparations for the polls.

Igini made the disclosure on Wednesday during an appearance on Arise Television’s Morning Show.

According to him, some of the electoral officials who allegedly received the money later reported the incident to him.

He said he cautioned the affected officials, warning that they could face arrest if they failed to maintain ethical standards, but they reportedly argued that certain provisions of the Electoral Act protected them from consequences.

The former REC expressed concern that some legal provisions appear to grant immunity, making it difficult to sanction electoral misconduct.

He also raised concerns about Nigeria’s electoral framework ahead of the 2027 general elections, warning that some provisions could undermine the credibility of the process.

Igini noted that top INEC officials, including the chairman, national commissioners, and resident electoral commissioners, would only serve supervisory roles on election day, a situation he said could create loopholes.

He said: “I had the privilege of being appointed by two presidents of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. I have traversed the entire country conducting the election.

“With respect to presiding officers, do you know that when I had trained people on a Wednesday for the 2019 election, for the Saturday election, politicians went to share money for presiding officers, dollars.

“Some of them came to me. When they told me, I said some of you will be arrested if you don’t observe the highest principle of ethical standards.

“I was told that they pointed out to them this section, saying that nothing will happen to them. They will not be invited to tribunal. So this provision we are seeing here, immunity have been provided for them. You rig election, you will not be invited. They said any instruction of INEC, you cannot obey it. Nothing will happen to you.

“Now the reason why I’m now asking my constituency (INEC) to stand tall is the fact that, in the final analysis, this matter will be taken to the court. We expect what we call a purposive interpretation…”

He added that electoral reforms are necessary to address loopholes that, in his view, have repeatedly weakened Nigeria’s electoral integrity.
