The controversy began when Senator Cruz and other U.S. lawmakers accused Nigeria’s government of supporting terrorism and enabling religious violence against Christians. Omokri, speaking on ARISE News, rejected these allegations, labeling them as “ludicrous.” He emphasized that both Christians and Muslims in Nigeria have suffered from terrorist attacks and that attributing these acts solely to religious motives ignores the broader context.

In response to the allegations, Omokri organized a fact-finding mission involving U.S. officials. The delegation included Mike Arnold, the Republican Mayor of Blanco, Texas, and filmmaker Jeff Gibbs. They met with leaders from the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and the Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI), as well as visited internally displaced persons (IDP) camps across the country. Omokri stated that the delegation had briefed Senator Cruz and other lawmakers before their visit and had gathered firsthand information to counter the claims.

Omokri also criticized the U.S. government for what he described as moral complicity in Nigeria’s security challenges, suggesting that previous U.S. policies had contributed to the current situation. He warned that designating Nigeria as a “country of particular concern” could exacerbate tensions and embolden terrorist groups.

Religious leaders in Nigeria have also rejected the “Christian genocide” narrative. The Christian Association of Nigeria and the Jama’atu Nasril Islam stated that while violent attacks on religious communities are tragic, they are not part of a coordinated campaign against any particular faith. They attributed the violence to factors such as poverty, banditry, and political manipulation, rather than religious persecution.

The debate has highlighted the complexities of Nigeria’s security landscape, where religious, ethnic, and political factors intersect.
