Edo Governor Orders Commissioners to Wear Asiwaju Cap at Meetings
Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has ordered all 19 newly appointed commissioners to wear the “Asiwaju cap,” a symbol of loyalty to President Bola Tinubu, at every executive council meeting. Officials who fail to comply will be denied entry, the governor said.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The directive was issued Monday during the commissioners’ swearing-in ceremony in Benin City. Governor Okpebholo credited federal support for the smooth start of his administration following the November 2024 election.
“I will not forgive any commissioner who is not wearing Tinubu’s Asiwaju cap. If you come to the EXCO meeting without the cap, you’re going back,” he said.
The Asiwaju cap, known for its distinctive design, has become a symbol of allegiance to President Tinubu. The governor emphasized that wearing the cap shows political unity and loyalty to both the state and federal leadership.
This move comes shortly after recent cabinet changes, including the dismissal of Attorney General Samson Osagie. Social media users have expressed mixed reactions, with some praising the focus on party unity, while others criticized the order as unnecessary political symbolism.
Governor Okpebholo also reminded commissioners and special advisers to avoid using their positions for personal gain, saying his administration has zero tolerance for corruption. He described the cap mandate as a practical way for his team to publicly show support for President Tinubu ahead of upcoming elections.
The policy highlights a growing trend in Nigerian politics, where attire and symbols are increasingly used to signal loyalty within parties. Observers say it remains to be seen how the mandate will affect the performance and public perception of the Edo State Executive Council.
Governor Okpebholo’s directive underscores his commitment to consolidating political loyalty and aligning state governance with federal directives. Analysts say such measures may strengthen party cohesion but could also spark debate about the role of political symbolism in governance.
