Primate Ayodele Slams Tinubu Over Pardon of Convicted Criminals

Published

Leader of INRI Evangelical Spiritual Church, Primate Elijah Ayodele, has criticized President Bola Tinubu for granting presidential pardons to individuals with what he described as “bad criminal records.”....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Ayodele, known for his outspoken opinions on national issues, said the president’s recent decision was “unjustifiable” and sends the wrong signal to Nigerians, especially those struggling to uphold the law despite hardship.

Speaking through a statement made available to journalists on Tuesday in Lagos, the cleric said the act could weaken the country’s fight against corruption and other forms of crime.

“It is disappointing that President Tinubu could extend pardon to people whose records are tainted with corruption and criminal activities,” Ayodele said. “This kind of decision will discourage honest citizens and embolden those who engage in wrongdoing.”

The spiritual leader argued that leadership must demonstrate fairness and integrity at all times, adding that such controversial pardons damage public trust in government institutions.

Ayodele also accused the current administration of neglecting the suffering masses while showing compassion to those who have betrayed public confidence.

“Nigerians are hungry, the economy is unstable, yet the government is prioritizing pardoning convicted criminals. What message does this send to the youth?” he asked. “It shows that you can commit crimes and still be rewarded if you have connections.”

He further warned that the act could have long-term political consequences for the Tinubu administration, noting that Nigerians are becoming more conscious of government actions.

The cleric called on the president to focus more on rebuilding the economy, improving security, and tackling poverty rather than making political gestures that “benefit only a few.”

“This government should work for the people, not for friends or political associates. Nigerians voted for change and progress, not favoritism,” Ayodele said.

The presidential pardon, announced earlier this week, reportedly covered several individuals convicted for financial and other crimes. The decision has sparked mixed reactions across the country, with some human rights groups questioning the timing and transparency of the process.

Critics argue that releasing such individuals undermines Nigeria’s anti-corruption drive, while supporters of the move claim it is part of a reconciliation strategy to give offenders a second chance.

However, Ayodele insisted that national reconciliation should not come at the expense of justice and accountability.

“Forgiveness is important, but there must be sincerity and fairness in governance,” he said. “Nigeria cannot develop if leaders keep protecting people who have caused pain and poverty to others.”

The popular prophet urged religious leaders and civil society groups to continue speaking out against policies that do not serve the public interest.

“Our silence will make things worse. Every leader must be held accountable, including the president,” Ayodele added.

As debates continue over the pardon, many Nigerians are watching closely to see if the Tinubu administration will respond to growing criticism from clerics, activists, and opposition figures who view the move as a setback in the nation’s anti-corruption efforts.
