Thousands Flee as Boko Haram Strike Border Town in Borno

MAIDUGURI, Nigeria — More than 5,000 people from Kirawa in Borno State fled into neighbouring Cameroon after Boko Haram militants attacked their town on Thursday night.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Among the buildings burned were the palace of the district head, Abdulrahman Abubakar, a military barracks, homes and several vehicles. Abubakar said the violence left residents with “no option but to flee.”

Residents escaped into Cameroon at night. Others ran to Maiduguri, the state capital.  Many now stay in refugee camps, or sleep in mosques, classrooms, on roadsides.

One displaced person, Buba Aji, said the nights are full of fear. He described sleeping under heavy rain outside with no shelter.

Abdulrahman Abubakar, the district head, said he had to leave for safety and urged the government to restore security.

Governor Babagana Zulum promised help. He also warned that leaving border towns without soldiers poses serious risks.

Local officials also called for deployment of more troops in vulnerable areas including Kirawa, Wulgo, Baga, Damasak, Malam Fatori.

This latest attack adds to a growing pattern of insurgent violence in Borno. Earlier, many people displaced by Boko Haram had begun returning home after military clearance.  But incidents like this cause new waves of fear and displacement.
