Residents of Iwoye-Ketu, a community in the Imeko-Afon Local Government Area of Ogun State, have voiced their deep frustration and anger over the recent surge in kidnappings and killings plaguing their town. The increasing violence has left the community living in constant fear, unsure of when the next attack might occur.

In a statement released on Tuesday, signed by the community chairman, Semiu Usman-Legitan, and the secretary, Wale Fadipe, the residents blamed the rising insecurity on certain criminal elements allegedly harbored among some foreigners living in the area. The statement pointedly accused these individuals, believed to be members of the Fulani ethnic group, of being responsible for the brutal attacks.

The community leaders revealed that the attackers had recently claimed the life of Kabiru Ogunrinde, who was killed while assisting the police at a crime scene. Additionally, another resident, Eric Adekanmbi, was tragically killed three days ago while attempting to secure the release of a kidnapped victim.

The statement highlighted the growing sense of fear and insecurity among the people of Iwoye-Ketu, noting that the town’s proximity to the border has made it particularly vulnerable to criminal activities. “In recent months, the situation in Iwoye-Ketu has deteriorated rapidly,” the statement read. “Our community has become a hotbed of kidnappings, killings, and other violent acts. These individuals have shown no regard for human life, attacking and hacking our people to death at the slightest provocation.”

The community leaders emphasized that the frequency and brutality of these attacks have left the residents in a state of constant anxiety. The month of August alone witnessed three separate kidnapping incidents, marking a worrying escalation in violence. “These kidnappings are not isolated incidents but are part of a broader campaign of terror being waged against our people,” the statement continued. “The attackers have been relentless in their efforts, leaving a trail of bloodshed and sorrow in their wake. Our community is under siege, and the threat to our lives and properties has never been more dire.”

In response to the worsening security situation, the leaders of Iwoye-Ketu, along with various interest groups, have engaged in numerous meetings with security agencies, seeking a solution. However, despite these efforts, there has been little relief, with no arrests made in connection with the recent killing of Adekanmbi, despite petitions submitted to the police and the Department of State Services (DSS).

The community is now calling for urgent intervention from the state governor, Dapo Abiodun, as well as relevant government agencies and international organizations, to prevent further bloodshed in the border town.

Moreover, the community has strongly refuted allegations made in a YouTube video that accused the town’s regent, Enoch Alaye, and the Divisional Police Officer of Imeko of colluding with the Fulani group and supporting the killings. The community leaders described these accusations as baseless and false, further stressing the need for accurate information and responsible reporting.
