Parents Protest Alleged Extortion At Abia Federal School, Demand Government Action.
Parents and guardians of students at the National Institute of Nigerian Languages Demonstration Secondary and Nursery/Primary Schools (NDSS and NNPS), Aba, Abia State, have raised concerns over alleged extortion by the school management, calling for immediate intervention from the Minister of Education and the Abia State Commissioner for Education.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The schools, located along the Obingwa axis of New Umuahia Road and serving as staff schools of the National Institute of Nigerian Languages (NINLAN), have a population of about 2,000 students comprising children of staff and members of the public.
According to Nivo News, the Parents Teachers Association (PTA) accused the NINLAN management of introducing arbitrary levies and increasing school fees by more than 100 percent. PTA Chairman, Dr. Chidi Emenike, expressed shock at what he described as an “extortionist policy,” saying the Executive Director of NINLAN, Professor Ogbonna Onuoha, imposed unrealistic and unsustainable fees for the 2025/2026 academic session.
He revealed that tuition for primary pupils had risen from ₦20,000 to ₦44,500 per term, while secondary school students now pay ₦65,000, up from ₦35,000. Boarding fees were also raised from ₦100,000 to ₦140,000, despite declining food prices nationwide.
Parents also lamented additional charges such as ₦20,000 annual caution fees for secondary students and ₦10,000 for primary pupils, ₦10,000 and ₦5,000 per term as medical fees, and ₦5,000 each for ICT and examination fees. They described the levies as unjustified and exploitative.
“These increments are unbearable and contradict the purpose of demonstration schools, which were meant to provide affordable education for the children of staff and the host community,” Emenike stated.
Another PTA member, Barrister Chukwuemeka Nwachukwu, faulted the management for operating the schools like private institutions, insisting that such decisions should involve proper consultation with parents. He said the PTA was not opposed to the ₦65,000 tuition officially approved by the federal government but rejected the “oppressive levies” added by the management.
Nwachukwu urged the Federal Ministry of Education, the Abia State Government, and the National Assembly to urgently intervene, warning that many parents might withdraw their children due to the financial strain. He also expressed concern for parents whose children are in terminal classes, noting that the timing of the increment leaves them with no viable alternative.
Efforts by Nivo News to reach the Public Relations Officer of NINLAN, Chris Nwankwo, were unsuccessful, as calls and messages were not answered at the time of filing this report.
