Nomination Details and Support
Roper confirmed that Akande’s nomination will take place in 2026, with backing from a coalition of countries including the United Kingdom, Nigeria, Japan, Kenya, and Slovenia. Akande’s previous achievement includes his election to the United Nations (UN) International Law Commission (ILC) in November 2021, further solidifying his international legal standing.
British Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab had earlier declared Akande as the UK’s candidate for the International Law Commission for the term from 2023 to 2027, demonstrating continued confidence in his legal expertise.

Akande’s Legal Background and Achievements
Born and raised in Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria, Dapo Akande is an alumnus of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, where he earned his Bachelor of Law (LLB). With over 25 years of experience in public international law, he has built a reputation as one of the foremost legal minds in his field.
His legal career began as a research assistant to the late Prince Bola Ajibola, SAN, a former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice. Akande has represented various international legal cases before several prestigious courts, including the International Court of Justice, the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea, the World Trade Organisation, the International Criminal Court, and the European Court of Human Rights.
In addition to his courtroom experience, Akande has served as a consultant for numerous global organizations such as the United Nations, African Union, NATO, the Food and Agriculture Organisation, and the Commonwealth Secretariat.
