ABUJA — President Bola Ahmed Tinubu returned to Nigeria’s capital on Monday after concluding a 10-day working visit in Lagos, during which he held high-level meetings aimed at bolstering investment, infrastructure and maritime development.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

According to a statement from his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President left Abuja on Sept. 26 for Lagos after attending the coronation of Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland, in Ibadan.

Key engagements in Lagos

While in Lagos, President Tinubu met with several prominent investors and industry leaders, including Bayo Ogunlesi, CEO of Global Infrastructure Partners, and Hakeem Belo-Osagie, Chairman of Metis Capital Partners and former chairman of UBA and Etisalat.

He also hosted Arsenio Dominguez, Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), together with the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, and other maritime stakeholders. In those talks, the President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to growing Nigeria’s maritime sector and positioning it as a stronger revenue stream beyond oil.

Additionally, ahead of Nigeria’s 65th Independence Day, Tinubu visited Imo State to inaugurate various projects and unveiled a book by Governor Hope Uzodimma chronicling a decade of APC governance.

He also commissioned the renovated National Theatre in Lagos—renamed the Wole Soyinka Centre for Culture and the Creative Arts—and used his Independence Day address to call on Nigerians to unite, speak positively of the nation, and back national development efforts.

On Oct. 4, he traveled to Jos, Plateau State, to attend the funeral of Mama Lydia Yilwatda, mother of APC National Chairman Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, making public assurances of fairness and equity among religious communities.

Return to Abuja, next steps

Upon his return to Abuja, President Tinubu is expected to engage with key national institutions and agencies to follow up on his Lagos visit’s outcomes. One early meeting reportedly will be with Bashir Ojulari, Group CEO of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), focusing on energy policies and aligning them with broader investment and diversification goals.

Observers say the visit highlights Tinubu’s dual approach: rally private capital and strengthen institutional anchors in Abuja. The Lagos corridor remains Nigeria’s commercial nerve center, and such trips are seen as crucial to closing the gap between federal strategy and on-the-ground industry confidence.

Challenges and expectations

Analysts note Nigeria is at a fragile inflection point. With a volatile global climate, energy price pressures, and domestic demands for jobs and infrastructure, the success of such working visits hinges on clear follow-through and measurable outcomes.

If President Tinubu can transform dialogue into actionable projects, especially in maritime logistics and infrastructure, the visit may be remembered as a turning point rather than a ceremonial tour.

Yet skepticism remains. Implementation has historically lagged in previous administrations, and civil society and media will closely monitor whether promises translate into concrete results.

For now, Nigeria watches as Tinubu returns to the capital with a slate of new pledges and expectations.

He stressed that democracy cannot function effectively where opposition is weakened or silenced, warning that such a situation could make the country volatile.

According to him, leaders who ignore criticism and surround themselves only with praise risk making avoidable mistakes that history often corrects harshly.

George said the President is at a critical point where he must choose between strengthening democratic institutions or allowing the current political tension to deepen.

He lamented that while attacks continue to claim lives across several states, both government and opposition figures are politicising the crisis instead of finding lasting solutions.

Yusuf pointed to repeated attacks even after official assurances, arguing that criminal groups are increasingly emboldened and openly challenge state authority, including issuing warnings before carrying out attacks.

He further claimed that in some cases, armed groups operate with little fear of consequences, while public trust in state protection continues to weaken.

According to him, the growing influence and acceptance of such groups in some communities is a dangerous trend that could worsen if not urgently addressed.

He warned that failure to tackle insecurity decisively could lead to a situation where criminal elements gain even more legitimacy within society and political structures.

Speaking on the Beast Mode Podcast, Iwobi said personal experience facing the two superstars influenced his opinion.

Iwobi noted that by that stage of his career, Ronaldo was highly efficient, focusing mainly on goal scoring whenever he got the ball.

However, the Fulham midfielder said his experience against Messi left a deeper impression, especially during his Champions League debut for Arsenal against Barcelona at Camp Nou in 2016.

He described being overwhelmed by the atmosphere and the star-studded Barcelona team featuring Messi, Neymar, Suarez, Iniesta, Xavi, and Dani Alves.

Iwobi said Messi’s control of space made him feel untouchable on the pitch, adding that defenders could barely get close to him whenever he had the ball.

He also recalled facing Messi again at the 2018 World Cup, where the Argentine scored in Nigeria’s 2–1 defeat.

Despite respecting both legends, Iwobi said his encounters convinced him that Messi stands out slightly above Ronaldo.
