During a quarterly safety engagement at Safe Journey Beach in Calabar South, NIWA’s Calabar Area Manager, Engr. Stanley Onuoha, presented the life jackets to beach operators, boat owners, and maritime stakeholders. The ambassadors include the chairman of the maritime workers union, local councilors, traditional rulers, and members of the State House of Assembly. Onuoha emphasized that the ambassadors would help spread the message of waterway safety to grassroots communities.
The life jackets were distributed to various beaches and ferry operators, including Safe Journey Beach, Henshaw Town Beach, Nsidung Beach, Abitto Ferry, Sea Express, Afikpo Beach, and the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria. Beach operators and boat owners expressed gratitude for the life-saving equipment, acknowledging its critical role in preventing water accidents.
This initiative is part of NIWA’s ongoing efforts to enhance safety on Nigeria’s inland waterways. The authority has previously distributed life jackets in other states, such as Niger and Lagos, as part of a nationwide water safety campaign. These efforts align with the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy’s objectives to improve inland water transport safety, reduce accidents, and save lives.
Engr. Onuoha commended the compliance of boat operators in Cross River State, noting an 80% adherence to safety guidelines. He attributed this to the state’s collaborative efforts with NIWA and other partners. The Area Manager expressed optimism that continued sensitization and enforcement would further reduce boat accidents in the region.
The appointment of safety ambassadors and the distribution of life jackets are part of NIWA’s broader strategy to promote waterway safety across Nigeria. The authority plans to continue its safety engagements and collaborate with local communities to ensure the effective implementation of safety standards.
