Dollar Holds Steady as Naira Faces Market Pressure
Lagos, Nigeria (AP) — The United States dollar traded at around ₦1,484 against the Nigerian naira on Friday at the official foreign exchange market, while the parallel, or black market, rate stood slightly higher at about ₦1,490 per dollar.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The difference between the two markets shows the continued pressure on Nigeria’s currency. For many Nigerians, the black market is often the only way to get foreign exchange quickly, since official supply is limited.
Impact on Everyday Life
The strength of the dollar has a direct effect on the cost of goods and services in Nigeria. Items such as food, fuel, electronics, and medicine — most of which are imported — become more expensive when the naira weakens. Families sending their children to school abroad also face higher costs for tuition and living expenses.
“I used to pay less for school fees when the dollar was cheaper, but now I have to double my budget,” said Grace Adeyemi, a mother in Lagos whose son studies in the United Kingdom. “It’s becoming very difficult for us.”
Why the Naira Is Under Pressure
Analysts say the pressure on the naira is caused by several factors:
- High demand for dollars: Businesses and individuals need foreign currency for imports, travel, and investment.
- Limited supply: The Central Bank of Nigeria has restricted access to official dollars to control reserves.
- Speculation: Traders often buy and hold dollars in expectation of future naira weakness.
Nigeria depends heavily on crude oil exports for its foreign exchange earnings. But oil production has been inconsistent, and global oil prices have fluctuated. These factors reduce the amount of dollars available to the country.
Government Response
The government and the Central Bank have tried several measures to stabilize the naira. These include changes to the exchange system, policies to attract foreign investment, and efforts to increase dollar inflows from remittances and exports.
However, results have been mixed. Critics argue that until Nigeria reduces its dependence on imports and boosts local production, the naira will remain weak against the dollar.
Voices From the Market
In the Balogun Market in Lagos, many traders say the rising dollar rate has affected their businesses.
“I buy fabrics from Turkey, and the price keeps going up because of the dollar,” said Musa Ibrahim, a textile dealer. “Customers are complaining, but I cannot reduce my prices because I spend more to import.”
Travelers also feel the impact. Airline tickets, foreign hotel bookings, and visa payments are all priced in dollars. “Planning a holiday abroad has become a luxury,” said Uche Okafor, a banker in Abuja.
What Analysts Predict
Economic experts warn that unless Nigeria secures stronger foreign exchange reserves, the naira could fall further. Some believe the gap between the official and black-market rates will continue unless the country increases exports, reduces import dependence, and attracts long-term investments.
“Stability will not come overnight,” said economist Tunde Akinyemi. “Nigeria needs policies that encourage production, reduce import bills, and bring more dollars into the system. Otherwise, the pressure on the naira will remain.”
Looking Ahead
For now, the dollar remains stable against the naira, but uncertainty continues. Many Nigerians watch the rates daily because they affect not just businesses but the cost of living.
The exchange rate has become more than an economic number — it is now a central issue in the lives of millions, influencing what families can afford and how businesses survive.
As the dollar stands at about ₦1,484 officially and ₦1,490 on the black market, Nigerians wait to see if new government policies can bring relief or if the pressure will continue.
