Anambra Residents Benefit from NYSC Free Health Care Initiative

Published

on

ONITSHA, Nigeria — Hundreds of residents in Anambra State have received free medical treatment through a health care outreach organized by the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The program, held under the NYSC Health Initiative for Rural Dwellers, provided residents with free consultations, medical checkups, and essential drugs. It was part of the scheme’s effort to support communities with limited access to health care.

Residents gathered at health centers and outreach points in rural communities where NYSC medical volunteers, including doctors, nurses, and pharmacists, attended to patients. Common health conditions such as malaria, high blood pressure, and minor infections were treated. Counseling on nutrition, hygiene, and preventive health measures was also provided.

The initiative, according to NYSC officials, is designed to reach underserved populations. Many communities in Anambra lack adequate health facilities, and residents often face long distances and high costs when seeking care. The outreach offered them a rare chance to access medical services at no cost.

Dr. Ifeoma Uche, one of the corps doctors, said the program is important because it saves lives. “Many people here cannot afford basic medical care. Through this initiative, we can treat illnesses early and also educate them on how to prevent future problems,” she said.

Community leaders welcomed the program, describing it as a relief to their people. Chief Nnamdi Okafor, a local elder, said the free medical services came at the right time. “Our community has suffered because of lack of a hospital. Many families cannot pay for treatment. This support from NYSC gives hope,” he said.

Patients who benefited also shared their appreciation. A mother of three, Mrs. Ngozi Eze, said she was treated for malaria and given free medication. “I am grateful because I did not have money to go to a private hospital. The doctors here helped me and also examined my children,” she said.

The NYSC said the outreach is part of its social responsibility. Beyond health care, corps members often engage in community development projects such as school repairs, environmental sanitation, and vocational training.

Officials added that the Health Initiative for Rural Dwellers has been carried out in several states, with plans to expand its reach. The Anambra edition was supported by local health authorities and volunteers.

NYSC State Coordinator, Mrs. Blessing Iruma, explained that the scheme is determined to continue such programs. “This outreach is about bringing health care closer to the people. We will keep working with local leaders to identify communities most in need,” she said.

Experts say health outreach programs like this help reduce pressure on overstretched hospitals and prevent avoidable deaths. They also encourage people to seek treatment early instead of waiting until conditions worsen.

Nigeria continues to face challenges in public health. Many rural communities lack doctors, and government hospitals struggle with overcrowding. Initiatives such as the NYSC program offer temporary relief but highlight the need for long-term investment in the health sector.

For residents of Anambra, the free treatment was more than just medical support — it was a sign that they are not forgotten. As Mrs. Eze said, “Today, we feel that government cares for us.”

The NYSC said it plans to return to more communities in the coming months, with the hope of reaching thousands of people across the state.

“THEY DON’T LIKE ME!”: FCT Minister Nyesom Wike Exposes Tense Relationship With Civil Servants!.

Published

  • FCT Minister Nyesom Wike stated during a monthly media chat in Abuja that he is unpopular among civil servants.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

    • He attributed this lack of popularity to his efforts to shut down channels for the fraudulent diversion of public funds, explaining that money previously misappropriated by staff is now being redirected toward road infrastructure.

    Reasons for Friction

    • The Minister criticized the habit of approving funds for unnecessary activities, such as traveling to conferences in the United States for land administration, suggesting that staff should instead conduct research locally.

    • Wike highlighted a significant shift in budget management, noting that he reduced recurrent expenditure in favor of capital expenditure, moving from a system where recurrent spending accounted for 65 percent of the budget to one where capital projects now receive 70 percent of funding.

    • He maintained that he will not approve large sums for “frivolous” conferences, choosing instead to prioritize infrastructure projects that provide tangible benefits to the public.

    • Conclusively, Wike asserted that because he puts money into roads rather than funding these conferences—which he described as vehicles for corruption—he does not expect to be liked by the civil service workforce.
