The 37-year-old Spanish star revealed his decision in a video message posted on Instagram. He said the time had come to close a career that spanned nearly 20 years and brought him titles in Spain, Europe and on the international stage.

“I feel this is the right moment to say goodbye,” Busquets said. “I have lived a dream and I am grateful for everything football has given me.”

A Barcelona Legend

Busquets made his professional debut for FC Barcelona in 2008 under then-coach Pep Guardiola. Over the next 15 years, he became a mainstay in the club’s midfield, playing 722 matches and winning nearly every trophy available.

With Barcelona, Busquets collected nine La Liga championships, seven Copa del Rey titles and three UEFA Champions League crowns. Known for his calm control, sharp positioning and ability to read the game, he was often described as the “brain” of Barcelona’s possession-based style.

Former teammates such as Lionel Messi and Andrés Iniesta frequently praised Busquets for doing the “dirty work” that allowed others to shine. Though not a prolific scorer, his tactical awareness made him essential.

Success with Spain

Busquets also had a glittering international career. He earned 143 caps for Spain, helping his country win the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa and the 2012 European Championship in Poland and Ukraine.

He was part of Spain’s golden generation, alongside Xavi Hernández, Iniesta, David Villa and Iker Casillas, that dominated world football for several years.

“Busquets is one of the greatest players in the history of Spanish football,” Spain coach Luis de la Fuente said after the announcement. “He gave us balance, intelligence and leadership.”

Miami Chapter

In 2023, Busquets joined Inter Miami CF in Major League Soccer, reuniting with longtime friend and former Barcelona teammate Messi. His arrival marked one of the most high-profile signings in MLS history.

Since then, he has played more than 60 matches for Miami and helped lead the club to its first trophy, the 2023 Leagues Cup. Fans praised his vision and composure, which raised the level of the team around him.

His current contract is set to expire after the 2025 MLS playoffs, making this fall his final months on the field.

Inter Miami coach Gerardo “Tata” Martino said Busquets’ impact went beyond statistics. “He transformed the way we play. His presence brought confidence to the whole squad,” Martino said.

End of an Era

Busquets’ retirement closes the chapter on one of football’s most influential midfielders. Alongside Xavi and Iniesta, he formed a trio that many experts consider among the best in history.

He never relied on speed or strength but on awareness, positioning and simple passing. His style influenced a generation of players and remains a model studied in coaching courses worldwide.

Fans, teammates and coaches responded quickly to his announcement, sharing messages of respect on social media. Messi wrote, “Playing with you has been one of the greatest joys of my career. Thank you for everything.”

What Comes Next

Busquets has not announced his future plans, but Spanish media speculate he may pursue coaching or a role at Barcelona. Others suggest he could stay connected to Inter Miami in a management position.

For now, his focus remains on finishing the season. Miami is pushing for a strong playoff run, hoping to give Busquets a final chance at silverware before he walks away from the pitch.

“Football has given me more than I ever imagined,” Busquets said. “Now it is time to enjoy these last moments and then begin a new chapter.”

As he prepares to retire, his legacy is secure: a World Cup champion, a Barcelona legend, and a player whose quiet excellence shaped modern football.
