Buni Donates 47 Vehicles, 50 Motorcycles to Boost Security in Yobe
Gov. Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State has donated 47 vehicles and 50 motorcycles to security agencies in an effort to strengthen the fight against crime and terrorism in the state.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The donation, announced Friday in Damaturu, is part of the state government’s continued support for military and police operations against insurgents and other criminal groups.
Buni said the vehicles will be distributed to the Nigerian Army, the police, and other security outfits working in Yobe. He noted that the motorcycles will help security forces patrol hard-to-reach rural areas, where insurgents often hide and stage attacks.
“This is a demonstration of our government’s commitment to the safety and peace of our people,” Buni said while presenting the vehicles. “We will continue to provide the needed support to make Yobe safe for everyone.”
Security remains one of the biggest challenges in Yobe, a northeastern state that has suffered years of attacks from Boko Haram and its breakaway faction, the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP). Communities along the borders with Borno State and neighboring Niger Republic have faced repeated raids.
Officials said the new vehicles include pickup vans, buses, and utility trucks, while the motorcycles are rugged enough for bush terrain. The items are expected to improve mobility and surveillance for troops and officers stationed across the state.
The governor also urged security agencies to make good use of the equipment. “We expect discipline, professionalism, and effective deployment of these assets,” he said. “The people of Yobe deserve to live in peace, and this is a shared responsibility.”
Yobe State government has previously supported federal security agencies with equipment, logistics, and housing. Last year, Buni’s administration built housing units for police officers and renovated some military facilities in the state.
The move has been welcomed by residents, who say better-equipped security forces can respond faster to emergencies. “When Boko Haram attacked our community in the past, soldiers sometimes lacked vehicles to pursue them,” said Musa Abubakar, a farmer from Geidam. “We hope this will make a difference.”
Analysts note that while donations of vehicles and motorcycles are useful, broader challenges remain. Security forces in the northeast often face shortages of manpower, fuel, and advanced equipment such as drones and communication devices.
“The governor’s gesture is commendable, but it is only part of what is needed,” said security analyst Aisha Ibrahim. “The fight against insurgency requires continuous coordination between the state, federal government, and local communities.”
The Nigerian military has recorded recent successes in the region. Airstrikes and ground operations in neighboring Borno and Yobe have killed dozens of fighters in the past month, according to defense authorities. But insurgents remain active, and sporadic attacks on villages, highways, and farmlands still occur.
Buni called on residents to cooperate with the security agencies by sharing information on suspicious activities. “Security is everybody’s business,” he said. “When we work together, we can defeat those who seek to destroy our peace.”
The vehicles and motorcycles are expected to be deployed immediately to vulnerable areas. Officials say priority will be given to local government areas most affected by insurgency, including Geidam, Gujba, and Gulani.
The donation highlights the role of state governments in supporting Nigeria’s wider counterinsurgency efforts. While defense is the responsibility of the federal government, states like Yobe and Borno often provide logistics, housing, and welfare to keep security forces motivated.
For many residents, the latest support brings renewed hope. “We have suffered for many years,” said Falmata Ali, a resident of Damaturu. “If these vehicles help the army and police protect us better, then it is good news for all of us.”
Despite ongoing challenges, Yobe officials say the government remains determined to restore lasting peace. Buni pledged that his administration will continue to invest in both security and development, noting that safety is key for schools, markets, and businesses to thrive.
“We will not relent until every part of Yobe enjoys stability,” he said.
