Residents of Maiduguri are in a state of panic following severe flooding at Sanda Kyarimi Park, commonly known as Maiduguri Zoo, located in the city center. The flooding began around 1 a.m. on Tuesday and has rapidly spread across major areas of the city, leading to the displacement of many families in neighborhoods like Lagos Street, Modugari, Gwange, and Monday Market.
Witnesses reported alarming scenes as water engulfed the park, raising fears about the safety of both residents and the animals within the zoo. Kabiri Sani, a local resident, expressed his shock upon witnessing the rising water levels. “I left Wulari for Polo and was passing through the zoo area when I saw the water level. I was terrified because I know the caliber of wild animals in that zoo,” he said.
Another resident, Salamatu Mohammed, shared her experience of being forced to evacuate her home. “I left immediately after I was able to rescue my belongings and myself. I cannot stay in that area because I am sure that animals are currently outside,” she recounted. The anxiety in the community is palpable, with many fearing that escaped animals could pose a danger to the public.
Reports circulating on social media have heightened concerns. A photograph showing an ostrich roaming the streets near Borno ICAN’s office has been widely shared, further alarming residents about the potential for other animals to escape.
Efforts to contact zoo authorities for updates have been unsuccessful. The flooding crisis has not only affected the zoo but has also submerged critical infrastructures throughout Maiduguri, including roads, government offices, markets, and the palace of the Shehu of Borno.
