IBADAN, Nigeria — Actors and theatre enthusiasts gathered in Ibadan this weekend to honor former Oyo State Governor, Lam Adeshina Ladoja, with a special play celebrating his coronation and the city’s rich cultural heritage.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The event, held at the prominent Liberty Hall in Ibadan, drew a large crowd of residents, community leaders, and art lovers. The play highlighted Ladoja’s contributions to the city and showcased Ibadan’s historical and cultural legacy.

According to the organisers, the performance aimed to merge art with history, creating a platform to educate the younger generation about Ibadan’s traditional leadership and local heroes.

“The idea is to celebrate leadership and culture through drama,” said Adeola Alabi, one of the event’s directors. “We want everyone, especially the youth, to understand and appreciate the legacy of Ibadan and the role of leaders like Ladoja in shaping our society.”

The play featured more than 30 actors, who performed scenes depicting Ladoja’s rise to leadership and key moments from his political career. Traditional music, dance, and vibrant costumes brought the story to life, keeping the audience engaged from start to finish.

Many attendees said they were inspired by the performance. “It was amazing to see our history and leaders portrayed on stage,” said Funke Olatunde, a local school teacher. “The actors did a wonderful job of making history accessible and entertaining at the same time.”

The event also included a short speech from a local historian, Dr. Bayo Adesanya, who discussed Ibadan’s importance as a cultural hub in southwestern Nigeria. He explained how leaders like Ladoja have influenced the city’s development while preserving its traditions.

“Ibadan is more than a city; it is a symbol of Yoruba heritage and resilience,” Dr. Adesanya said. “Celebrating leaders like Ladoja reminds us of our shared history and the values that guide our community.”

Organisers said the play is part of a growing trend in Nigeria to use theatre and arts to honor historical figures and educate the public about local heritage. In recent years, several states have hosted similar events to highlight cultural milestones, traditional rulers, and public servants who have shaped society.

Ladoja, who served as governor from 2003 to 2007, was unable to attend the event due to prior commitments, but he sent a message of appreciation. “I am deeply honored by this celebration,” his note read. “It is encouraging to see our culture and leadership recognized in such a creative way. I hope it inspires the next generation to contribute positively to our community.”

Experts say events like this are important for building cultural awareness and pride. By combining theatre, music, and history, organisers are making it easier for young people to connect with Nigeria’s past while enjoying a modern entertainment experience.

“The play is educational but also fun,” said Alabi. “We hope it sparks conversations and encourages more people to explore the history and culture of Ibadan.”

The performance ended with a grand finale featuring a parade of actors dressed in traditional Yoruba attire, symbolizing unity, leadership, and cultural pride. Organisers said they plan to take the play to other cities in Oyo State and neighboring states in the coming months.

“This is just the beginning,” Alabi said. “We want to create a cultural movement that celebrates history, art, and leadership across Nigeria.”

He warned against dragging the state into fresh tension, accusing the state government of attempting to revive old allegations for political advantage.

Adewara said the PDP would not remain silent while what he called “political narratives” are used to influence public perception around a tragic incident that claimed multiple lives in Offa in 2018.
