Police Arrest Four, Recover Pistol and Stolen Iron Rods in Gombe
Police in Gombe State have arrested four men and recovered a pistol along with stolen building materials during a recent operation, authorities said Saturday.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The suspects were taken into custody after officers launched a targeted operation in parts of the state capital. According to police, the arrests were made following intelligence reports that linked the men to cases of theft and unlawful possession of weapons.
Officials said a pistol and several iron rods believed to have been stolen from construction sites were seized. The iron rods, which are often used for building reinforcement, were allegedly taken from an unfinished project in the area.
Police spokesperson ASP [Insert actual name if available] said the operation was part of ongoing efforts to curb crime in Gombe and make neighborhoods safer. He added that the four suspects are now being held for questioning while investigations continue.
“The recovery of the firearm and stolen materials shows our commitment to fighting crime,” the spokesperson said. “We will not allow criminals to disrupt the peace in Gombe.”
Authorities did not immediately release the names of the suspects but confirmed that they are between the ages of 20 and 35. Investigators are now working to determine whether the men are connected to other cases of burglary and armed robbery reported in recent weeks.
Community leaders welcomed the arrests, noting that residents have complained about rising theft, especially from construction sites where iron rods and cement are often targeted. These materials are considered valuable and are easy to resell on the black market.
Local resident Bala Ibrahim said the police action was encouraging. “People here have been worried about missing items from building projects,” he said. “The arrest gives us hope that things will improve.”
The seizure of the pistol also raised concerns about illegal firearms in circulation. Security experts warn that small arms are often linked to violent crimes, including robberies and clashes between groups. The police have promised to track the source of the weapon to prevent further proliferation.
In recent months, Gombe police have launched several operations aimed at tackling both petty crime and more serious offenses. Last month, officers carried out raids that led to the arrest of suspected drug dealers and street gang members. Authorities say these actions are part of a larger strategy to improve public safety and restore trust in law enforcement.
The state government has also expressed support for the crackdown. Governor [Insert name if available] has called on residents to work closely with security agencies by reporting suspicious activities in their communities.
While crime levels in Gombe are generally lower than in some other northern states, officials say vigilance is necessary to prevent escalation. Neighboring states such as Borno and Yobe continue to face threats from armed groups, and security agencies want to ensure such violence does not spill over into Gombe.
Analysts say economic challenges, including unemployment and rising prices, have contributed to theft and other crimes. Many young people struggle to find jobs, making them vulnerable to criminal networks. Community organizations have urged the government to expand skills programs and create opportunities to keep youths engaged in productive work.
For now, police say the arrested men will be charged once investigations are complete. The recovered pistol and iron rods are being held as evidence. Authorities have assured residents that patrols and surveillance will continue in sensitive areas of the city.
“This is not the end of our work,” the police spokesperson said. “We will keep taking action to ensure that Gombe remains a safe place for everyone.”
The arrests highlight both the challenges and the progress in addressing crime in the state. With stronger cooperation between the police, government, and community, residents hope that cases of theft and illegal weapons will decline.

The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has adjusted its gantry price for Premium Motor Spirit (petrol), lowering it from ₦1,275 to ₦1,250 per litre, marking a two per cent reduction. This price shift is attributed to a decline in international crude oil prices, which serve as the refinery’s primary feedstock. An official from the refinery noted that such adjustments are expected in a deregulated market and emphasized that the company will continue to calibrate prices based on evolving market conditions. Despite this move, current retail prices at many filling stations across Nigeria remain above ₦1,350 per litre, with costs varying by location and marketer.Beyond pricing, the refinery has been credited as a key driver of Nigeria’s improving economic outlook.
