Third Football Player Killed in Ecuador in September
QUITO, Ecuador (AP) — A professional football player was shot and killed in Ecuador on Friday, becoming the third player to die violently in the country this month, authorities said.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Police confirmed the victim as a 26-year-old midfielder who played for a second-division club. He was attacked by gunmen in the coastal city of Manta. Officials said he died at the scene.
The motive for the killing was not immediately clear. Police said an investigation is underway, but no arrests have been made.
The death follows two earlier killings of Ecuadorian footballers in September. On Sept. 1, striker Joao Mendoza was shot outside his home in Guayaquil. Days later, 23-year-old defender Bryan Caicedo was killed in Esmeraldas.
The string of violent attacks has shocked Ecuador’s football community and raised concerns about player safety. The Ecuadorian Football Federation said in a statement it was “deeply saddened” by the loss and called for stronger measures to protect athletes.
Ecuador has faced a surge in violent crime in recent years, linked to drug trafficking and gang activity. The government has deployed military forces to several provinces under a state of emergency, but violence continues.
Authorities said they will increase security at sporting events and offer support to clubs affected by the killings.
