American Ban, Nigerian Shame? Birth Tourism Row Sparks Urgent Hospital Reform Demands!”
The United States Mission in Nigeria has issued a stern warning that visa applicants whose primary intention is to give birth in the US—commonly known as birth tourism—will be denied entry. This announcement has reignited demands for Nigeria to urgently reform its healthcare system and address broader socioeconomic challenges.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
In a statement posted Monday on its official X (formerly Twitter) handle, @USinNigeria, the Mission stressed that consular officers would refuse visa applications if they suspect the applicant’s primary goal is to deliver a child in the US for citizenship purposes.
“Using your visa to travel for the primary purpose of giving birth in the United States so that your child will have US citizenship is not permitted,” the post read. “Consular officers will deny your visa application if they have reason to believe this is your intent.” The post carried the hashtags #VisaWiseTravelSmart and #USVisa, and included a graphic that reiterated the message.
Reacting to the development, former Nigerian Ambassador to Mexico, Ogbole Amedu-Ode, described the directive as part of an ongoing tightening of US immigration policy, which he dubbed a “Trump 2.0” strategy.
“This is a continuation of the new visa regime under the Trump-style immigration approach,” he said. “We know that some Nigerians travel not just for medical care but specifically to give birth, so their children can automatically acquire US citizenship. If the US government wants to discourage that, it is within their right—but Nigeria must also respond by fixing its own systems. Diplomacy is about reciprocity.”
Similarly, former Consul to Cameroon, Ambassador Rasheed Akinkuolie, advised Nigerian women to avoid travelling to the US for childbirth at this time, particularly those visibly pregnant.
“This is not the right time for heavily pregnant women to attempt travel for delivery in the United States,” he said. “President Trump has even suggested that children born to immigrants in the US may lose their citizenship—a move still being contested in court.”
He also noted that aside from US immigration policies, airlines generally refuse to board women in late-stage pregnancy due to health and liability concerns. “If a woman goes into labour mid-air, the airline must divert, incurring heavy costs, and the flight captain may face penalties.”
In Nigeria, the development has sparked criticism of the country’s weak health sector. The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) urged the Federal Government to use the moment as a wake-up call.
“The real issue is not foreign policies; it is our failing hospitals,” said NMA President, Prof. Bala Audu. “Medical tourism won’t stop because of a visa ban. The only lasting solution is to upgrade our health facilities and improve the working conditions for healthcare professionals.”
He added that many Nigerians who seek childbirth abroad do so not out of medical necessity, but to obtain foreign citizenship for their children. “Personally, I don’t desire any of my children to be born outside Nigeria. We are Nigerians,” he emphasized.
The NMA stressed that government must stop relying on external factors to curb medical tourism, urging systemic reforms, robust investments in healthcare infrastructure, and stronger support for Nigerian doctors and nurses.
