Nation Can’t Afford Another Shutdown – FG Urges Doctors to Reconsider Strike
The Lagos State Government has urged medical doctors under its employment to suspend their planned three-day warning strike, set to commence today, assuring that discussions with the Medical Guild are still ongoing.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
This appeal was made in a statement issued by Tunbosun Ogunbanwo, Director of Public Affairs at the Lagos State Ministry of Health.
The government stressed that it is addressing the doctors’ grievances with “sincerity and urgency,” and remains committed to resolving the concerns raised.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the Medical Guild—an umbrella body for doctors working with the Lagos State Government—announced the warning strike on Saturday, July 26, during a press conference. The strike is scheduled to begin Monday, July 29.
While acknowledging the issues raised by the Guild, the government reiterated its commitment to the welfare, motivation, and efficiency of all healthcare personnel in the state.
“A conciliation committee, composed of representatives from both the Medical Guild and the government, was established to resolve lingering matters,” the statement read. “Meetings have been held, and documents submitted by the Guild are under review in line with current policies and financial regulations.”
The government further affirmed its appreciation for the vital role medical professionals play in delivering healthcare to over 20 million Lagosians, appealing for continued dialogue to avoid service disruptions that could affect the general public.
“We appeal to the Guild to pursue peaceful engagement while efforts continue to reach an equitable resolution. The welfare of our residents remains paramount,” the statement added.
Residents were also commended for their patience, as the government assured that contingency measures were being activated to reduce the impact of the strike on public health services.
Meanwhile, Dr. Japhet Olugbogi, Chairman of the Medical Guild, said the strike became necessary after failed dialogue attempts with the government. He explained that the standoff began in April, when the government unilaterally deducted part of doctors’ salaries.
Although the deductions were initially reversed after what Olugbogi described as “spirited intervention and strategic engagement,” a fresh round of deductions occurred in July, again without prior notice or explanation.
The Guild is demanding an immediate reversal of the July deductions and the full payment of 12-month revised CONMESS arrears owed to honorary consultants at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH).
