Bizarre! Woman ‘Kidnaps’ Herself, Demands Ransom From Family in Delta
The Delta State Police Command has arrested a 29-year-old woman, Merit Eleh, along with several accomplices, for allegedly faking her own kidnapping and extorting ₦3 million in ransom from unsuspecting family members.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The command’s spokesperson, Bright Edafe, disclosed the development in a statement issued on Monday in Asaba, the state capital.
According to the police, Merit confessed to orchestrating the fake abduction to repay a ₦3.6 million loan she had taken from her brother. The money, she admitted, was spent on her bridal shower and hotel accommodations during her wedding in March 2025.
“She confessed that the ₦3.6 million she borrowed from her brother was used to fund her bridal shower and hotel expenses,” Edafe said.
Investigations revealed that in an effort to pay back the loan, Merit conspired with her boyfriend and others to stage her disappearance. They demanded and successfully collected a ₦3 million ransom, of which she retained ₦2.5 million while her accomplices shared the remaining ₦500,000.
The police said they received a report of the alleged kidnapping on July 21, 2025, involving a female victim in the Ajaji (Bonsaac) Layout area of Asaba. Acting on the report, Commissioner of Police Olufemi Abaniwonda directed the Special Anti-Kidnapping and Cyber Crime Squad, led by SP Godwin Osadolor, to track down the perpetrators and rescue the ‘victim.’
A swift, intelligence-led operation led to the arrest of Alfred Elisha at the Koka Roundabout and Ugochukwu Adim near DLA Road in Asaba on July 22, 2025.
“During interrogation, Alfred Elisha admitted that the incident was not a real kidnapping but a staged event planned with the victim,” Edafe explained.
Following this confession, the police arrested Merit Eleh, who confirmed the plot and detailed her role in the fraudulent scheme.
Edafe affirmed that all suspects connected to the staged abduction are now in custody, and the investigation is ongoing.
“They will be charged to court upon conclusion of the investigation,” he said.
The command also issued a stern warning to the public, cautioning against any attempt to deceive law enforcement or waste public resources, stressing that such acts will be met with the full force of the law.
