Although the presidency cited family reasons, sources revealed that President Bola Tinubu requested his resignation. Egbetokun officially stepped down on 24 February, with Olatunji Disu immediately appointed as Acting IGP.

One key reason was Egbetokun’s opposition to state policing. At a 2024 national dialogue, he warned that state-controlled police could be misused by governors and threaten human rights, clashing with Tinubu’s push for the policy to improve local security response.

Another factor involved low compliance with a 2025 directive requiring VIPs to seek security from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps instead of police protection.

A third concern was Egbetokun’s handling of journalists. The International Press Institute Nigeria listed him in its Book of Infamy over arrests, detentions, and summonses of around 24 journalists under his tenure, raising worries about the use of the Cybercrimes Act and negative media attention.

Describing politics as a reciprocal process, Wike stressed that the era of empty promises was over:

“Leaders must demonstrate their commitment to delivering good governance. You cannot make promises during elections and vanish afterward without fulfilling them. We asked you to support Tinubu, starting with the area council elections. On February 21, you came through, delivering 133 of the 135 polling units in the council for Tinubu. What more can we say but thank you? You have done your part; we will now do ours. Abaji people have spoken, and they spoke decisively,” he said.
