The accusation comes in response to a report first published by The Africa Report, which was reportedly shared by the US Mission. The article criticised Nigerian elites for allegedly mismanaging public funds, citing the construction of new government lodges in Oyo and Gombe states as examples of wasteful spending amid widespread poverty.
Presidency insiders pushed back against these claims, describing them as both misleading and unfair.
“These are two of the most fiscally responsible governors in the country,” one senior official said. “Governor Seyi Makinde has been repeatedly praised for his prudent financial management, while Gombe’s Inuwa Yahaya has prioritised critical investments in healthcare, infrastructure, and timely payment of salaries.”
Multiple government sources suggested that the report’s tone may have been influenced by a prior dispute. They alleged that the publisher of The Africa Report—who inherited the platform from his late father—had unsuccessfully sought financial backing from the Nigerian Governors’ Forum for the outlet’s Africa Roundtable event in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire. After being turned down, relations reportedly soured, prompting suspicions of retaliatory editorial coverage.
“This clearly contravenes Article 41(1) of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations,” a senior diplomat stated anonymously. “Foreign missions are not to interfere in the internal affairs of host countries. Promoting such content crosses that line.”
The row comes amid broader tensions in US–Nigeria relations. Officials recalled past missteps, including the US government’s now-infamous prediction in the 1990s that Nigeria would disintegrate by the year 2000—a forecast that never materialised.
More recently, the US State Department issued a July 15, 2025, travel advisory urging citizens to avoid 18 Nigerian states due to security threats and inadequate healthcare. Local analysts criticised the advisory as overly broad.
“It was a one-size-fits-all warning that failed to acknowledge the stability of major cities like Lagos and Abuja,” one security observer said. Others pointed out the irony, noting that nearly 47,000 Americans are projected to die from gun violence this year alone.
“Some Nigerian cities are actually safer than many U.S. cities plagued by gun crime,” another analyst added.
Despite the diplomatic friction, Nigerian officials reaffirmed their commitment to strong bilateral ties with the United States.
“We value our partnership with the U.S.,” said a senior presidential aide. “But it must be built on mutual respect. Our sovereignty and national dignity are not negotiable.”
