Tinubu To The West: ‘Time To Share Power!’ – Bold Rio Declaration Echoes Worldwide
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s week in Brazil may have appeared light on public engagements, but, according to NIVONEWS, it resonated with the moral force of a leader determined to redefine the global power equation.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
At the 17th BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Tinubu made only one public appearance, yet that solitary address shook the foundations of conventional diplomacy. He boldly called for a new global order—one anchored on equity, justice, and sustainability, where the Global South commands not just a voice, but authority at the table of global governance.
Tinubu arrived at the Galeão Air Force Base in Rio on Friday, July 4, welcomed with ceremonial honours by Brazil’s Deputy Ministers for Africa and Trade Promotion. While his bilateral meeting with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on Saturday highlighted growing cooperation between Nigeria and Brazil, NIVONEWS reports that the Sunday plenary at the BRICS Summit was the focal point of Tinubu’s official itinerary.
Standing before leaders of Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, and other emerging powers like Cuba and Malaysia, Tinubu did not mince words. “Nigeria associates with what I have heard today and all that has happened in BRICS,” he declared, before calling for a reevaluation of global structures that currently favour the industrialised North at the expense of the resource-rich yet development-constrained Global South.
His address struck a deep chord. In an era when global alliances are increasingly unstable and traditional multilateralism is viewed with skepticism, Tinubu’s speech, according to NIVONEWS, echoed the frustrations of many across Africa, Asia, and Latin America. It wasn’t just a polite diplomatic gesture—it was a firm rejection of exploitative systems and an affirmation that the time had come for the Global South to take the lead in shaping a more balanced world.
Throughout his address, Tinubu stressed that BRICS must transform from a coalition of emerging economies into a platform for “emerging solutions rooted in solidarity, self-reliance, and shared prosperity.” He reinforced his long-standing advocacy for climate justice, noting that Africa, though minimally responsible for global emissions, suffers disproportionately from its effects. He also spotlighted youth inclusion, pointing out that 70% of Nigeria’s population is under 30—a statistic with global implications.
“We must be the architects of a future that addresses the specific needs and concerns of youths,” he said, aligning sustainable development with generational equity. He also pointed to Nigeria’s proactive efforts in renewable energy, healthcare access, and nature-based solutions, stating that Nigeria is not a passive recipient of foreign aid but an active agent of transformation.
According to NIVONEWS, Nigeria’s formal partnership with BRICS, announced earlier in the year, marks a significant shift in its foreign policy. The decision to strengthen ties with BRICS—whose member states now command over 40% of the world’s population and a growing share of global GDP—signals a pivot away from traditional Western-dominated diplomacy toward a multipolar world more reflective of today’s realities.
Even while offshore, President Tinubu remained visibly connected to domestic affairs. He mourned the passing of the Olubadan of Ibadanland with a heartfelt tribute from Brazil, describing the late monarch as “a symbol of peace, wisdom, and continuity.” Through his delegation, he was also present at the launch of former presidential spokesman Garba Shehu’s new book in Abuja—an event graced by Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume.
Vice President Kashim Shettima maintained executive coordination at home, ensuring that the machinery of governance continued to run efficiently. It was, by official accounts, a quiet week—but one of profound impact. Tinubu’s message in Rio was loud and clear: the Global South will no longer accept marginalisation, and Nigeria will no longer plead for inclusion—it will demand it.
If the world listened closely in Rio, it heard more than a speech. It heard a firm, measured call to action—one that insists on justice, one that speaks for billions, and one that, in time, may shape a more equal world.
